Went to put my E heads on the 475 tonight. I only had one 1016 Felpro, so I thought I'd try the "Butler" gaskets that I had in stock. As I was slipping the head over the studs, I noticed the gasket actually is smaller than the bore by several thousands on the outside of the block, and has several thousands of gap on the intake side.
The bore size is 4.215.

1. I figured I shouldn't use these gaskets, Comments?
2. Could my "Bore job" be off?
3. What is the advertised max bore size for the Butler gasket??

BTW, Block is zero decked. This is not a "new" build, just a freshen up. 1016's have worked fine for years.

Thx, Bill

I think they make a 4.200 and 4.250. Shouldn't stick in the bore, but you wouldn't be the first to do it.

Butler's catalog shows the #19375 head gasket for the 389" and 421" engines, the #19374 for the 400" and 455" engines. I would also call them. http://www.jbp-pontiac.com

FelPro I think has a 4.300 diameter for the 1016s.

The Fel-Pro #1016 has the 4.300" bore diameter as Skip said, the 4.300" is the only size i use on the 455" block. My new street engine is built with Cometic head gaskets .036" thick with a 4.300" ROUND diameter, no reliefs in this gasket. These Cometic gaskets fit perfect, no problems with a .035" overbore and E-heads.

No spray, piston to deck .004" gasket .036" total .040" piston to head for good quench. Cost $164.00 a pair, not cheap but a very good gasket and you can adjust compression with the thickness. You can get them in .025", .027", .030", .036", .040", .043", .045", .054", .067", .078", .120" thick. Bore sizes 3.950", 4.160", and 4.300". I buy them thru Rob at pietrzak@bright.net

I am running the rol gaskets now and they seem to fit ok.I have seen the problem you are talking about in my younger years and put them on anyway.I blew one at 30 runs at 12 to 1 comp. between the center cylinders.I would not run them.

Update - I talked with Jim Butler today about the gaskets. We are talking about the 400/455 gaskets made from the orig GM pattern, with the water holes reduced in size to better match the block holes and give more strength to the sealing area.
They do overhang slightly at .060, with my bore being .065 it was even more noticeable. Jim says people have been using them for years successfully with the .060 overbore. I feel uncomfortable with the amount of projection and will use 1016's. I worry about the seal with part of the ring overhanging, and the posibility of detonation from the "tin" in the combustion chamber. BTW, the bore diam of the gasket appears to be 4.20, so for bores under this, it should be fine...... Bill ... It's good to hear we have some other choices for the larger bores, THX!!
