Just bought a 65 Cat I drove it on the highway a few times and noticed on certain areas of the highway the rearend of my cat bounces and hops like crazy, almost like having someone jump on a water bed while your laying on it, its real bad. what would cause it to do this and is it repairable? any help or ideas is appreciated.

what you're describing sounds like worn out rear shocks. bounce the rear of the car a few times and then step back and watch the car's reaction. if it bounces more than once the shocks are getting weak.

If the shocks arent it try to see if theres a bulge in one of the tires, my cousin has a 69 Catalina and had the same thing happening, one of his rear tires had a big bulge in it from hitting a pothole we figured. Hope you figure it out!

Its weird because it only seems to hop on certain spans of the highway, the rearend will start to bounce and then it gets real bad and seems to bounce hard for days and then when i get off the section of span it will settle down to normal. so it only lasts for a min or so just long enough to get of the section of road. i have air shocks in the back and did try to put air in them to see if this helped but the air leaked out. could not having any air in the shocks cause this too? or does it matter?

Like I said air shocks with no air act like dead shocks. If it's the lines that are leaking, that can be fixed,if the shocks themselves are leaking replace them with a set of 50/50 gas shocks and I think you will be very happy.( especialy with the latter).

I have had this happen when a wheel/tire was badly out of balance. You hit a bump or something in the road and it feels like a basketball dribbling on the highway.

i'll put air in the shocks again and spray some GP to see if i can see where the leaks are coming from if its the shocks i'll get a pair of 50/50 gas shocks as stated. thanks for the help!

I had a problem with vibration at certain speeds and after balancing or replacing most everything in the drivetrain, it boiled down to getting my driveshaft rebalanced. I ruled it out, since it had never been damaged, but for whatever reason, it was out. The car is now smooth as silk at any speed.
