Bent my stroked 400 crank, need to build another. It was a "N" nodular crank. I have two others that are not "N" cranks. Engine makes over 500 HP without bottle. Not planning on using the bottle anymore on this engine. Will the standard cast crank be acceptable?

I can't answer your question for sure about how much stronger the N crank is versus the standard cast crank or what the HP limit is, but if you are interested in another N crank I think I can help you.

It is generally accepted the nodular iron is a better material for higher rev engines, as it has a better grain structure to absorb harmonics. Plain cast cranks are rigid enough for mild performance use, but once they reach their structural limit, they will go away.
400 nodular cranks are plenty easy to come by. The 350, 389 ('66 only) and some of the 326s are also the same nodular casting, and can be balanced to work fine in a 400 race engine. |

But the "N" must be present on all nodular cranks, right?

Timely question. I stripped down a 75 455 block last night and found a "non-N" crank, PN 496453 and was wondering if it would be suitable for my intensions, race motor of less than 600HP. Is it really nodular iron and just not marked? or is it a different material and if so, is it suitable?

In general, yes, the "N" sould be there. I've heard the later 455s were still nodular without the "N", but have no way to verify this.
