Default plus or minus what?

If you were going to hone your newly sleeved lifter bores, and sat down to measure the lifter bodies to figure out where to hone them to dimensionally, what is the maximum variation on the lifter body diameter you would accept? Not between lifters. On a single lifter.

Iron lifters, or roller, and stock block or no?

Aftermarket lifters. Rollers, .936" dia. The block isn't part of this.
Just looking for the max runout of the lifter body.

I would be very disappointed with the manufacturer if the lifter was not with-in 5 tenths 0.0005" anywhere on the lifter.

Thanks Tom. I posted this other places as well, and the consensus seems to be .0002"-.0005" . Looks like I have lifters to return. Mine are 3X your number.

I'm going to ask the manufacturer where they do their machining....Mexico or China.

Not to start a bash-fest or pi$$ing match, but is this a common manufacturer that others should keep an eye on or take extra notice of measurements?

In the process of building and buying parts myself, lifters will be purchased soon.

I will post this information. As it turns out, after some searching, this is not an unknown problem.

But to be fair, I want to give them a chance to make it right.
If they do, my post will be a positive one, where I reveal the manufacturer and stress the importance of checking everything and oh by the way, if you buy lifters from these guys they will stand behind them 100%.

If they don't stand behind them, it will not be a positive post and I will burn them on every car site I currently post on and likely add several to that list. Pictures and all.

I just went thru this lifter deal on my new block a good machine shop will be very critical on the lifter bore dimensions and if the lifter was large by 15 it wouldn't even fit in the lifter bore --just a thought

Maybe this was the issue?

Tom did you test fit any of the lifters or was the problem discovered just from taking the measurements?

We slid one lifter pair in and they fit. But mostly, the assembler/machinist was just measuring the lifters to see where they were dimension wise, and when it was obvious they had a serious problem the honing process was put off until a correction can be made.

This is the kind of crap that makes me crazy, because in a well run organization (and I have been a part of many of those) this should not happen. The ONLY way things like this do happen is sloppy QC.....or no QC at all.

My machine shop said this is common with lifters. Sad to say but certain items you can not take chances with. Roller rocker ratio's are not perfect either.
Seems everything for an engine needs to be measured and checked twice. I just bought 2 set's of main bearings to get the clearance in the specs I like.
The rod bearings I was able to switch the tight journal for a loose journal and get them with in specs. It is a ton of work building am engine, I feel your pain,
Keep us posted.

I double checked EVERYTHING one time on a Pontiac Engine for my car and it took me 4 months to sort out all of the "variances" in the parts and get things "close". There have been others (Chebby & Ford) I have worked with. Not Just Pontiac issues.

I was very glad I checked everything, assumed nothing. This was years ago when Pontiac offered the 455 SD "L" rods, but even those went to 3 machine shops to confirm why a couple of the 455 SD rods were finished under the spec for the big end bore.

The whole engine was like that. But it ran great at the end of the day.
