You think gas is expensive in USA, went by a station in Lisbon today and even the cheap stuff translates to $7.19/Gallon!! But hey they do have 95 octane at only $8.48/Gallon. It's no wonder they drive the little cars.

I paid 1.61/L here in Canada for 94 Octane = about $6/US gallon which is stupid since most of this country is floating on oil.

the octane in Europe is measured differently (RON versus average in the US), 95 in europe is the same as 91 in the US.

Gas is very heavily taxed in Europe as are new cars, much more than in the US. Canada is somewhere in the middle.

Ironically Europe uses the free market to influence car purchases while in the US the government uses heavy regulation. The European approach has been to place heavy taxes on fuel and larger engines sizes and let the economic pressure of those taxes drive customers to smaller more efficient cars. In the US regulations were enacted like CAFE to force car makers to design cars that customers would otherwise not buy. Both systems have their pros and cons.

Personally I think we should have lower income taxes but place steep import taxes on oil to properly fund our roads, reduce foreign energy imports (especially from our enemies in the Muslim world), support domestic energy production and reduce overall energy usage.

I remember something Reagan said before he was President in one of his weekly radio messages; basically he said that left and right both agreed that taxing things we want to discourage such as smoking reduces activity in that area so why in heck do we tax working income? Why not tax things that are bad for us like buying oil from people who take the money we give them and use it to blow us up?

I saw today that France is raising their gas tax again Jan 1st. The Prime Minister is pushing for all electric instead of gas powered cars. And riots have started all over France because of that.

Gas/diesel fuel is a cash cow and a political football. Here in Ohio, 87 octane (pisswater) is around $2.30 to $2.50 a gallon. Our politicians talk conservation and better gas mileage vehicles now that it's happened the our whining about lost tax revenue and talking about a milage tax, higher tax.
Within 25 miles of me is Pennsylvania and they have around 50 cents more per gallon tax. Pa.residents near Ohio buy their gas in Ohio.

It's gone way down here in Toronto these past few months. I saw 99 cents a litre today, which was shocking. Before that, it was above 1.30/litre.

.99/litre would be about 2.60 US/gallon for Regular. Over a third of that is tax.

$1.16 a litre/ 4.40 a us gallon. That’s pretty cheap for us, couple months ago was $1.50a litre/ 5.68 a us gallon. That’s regular, add another .20 or so for 91
