If it was done in 3D, simply save as a .stp file.
SW, SE, Inventor, Pro-E, etc.. all can read a step file.

If it's a 2D file, send it to me and I'll see if I can make it a 3D one.
I work in 3D (Inventor) all day long.

You can export just about any 3D CAD model as a igs file, which can be opened in anything. The only problem is they lose their history.

ProE will open autocad drawings, then you just need to save it as a ProE drawing (.dwg) and then open a 3d part file and import the sketch to extrude it.

It sounds more complicated than it is

I wonder what is would cost to send the file to a company with a 3D printer to have a model made.
You could have a life size (or I'd imagine smaller sizes could be printed) model of a Pontiac V8 block in a few hours.

a guy I am doing some contract CAD work for has a really nice ABS printer, not sure how much the material costs would be, but the last piece I designed for him took 6 hours, and it was an AR15 grip

I think he said his printer will print 24" by 24" by 24" models

that would be pretty big, I bet you could even do sections of the full size model and glue them together

My vote is for PY to be "THE" distributor for the 1:1 and 1:4 scale version of various Pontiac engine models. What would it take to make that happen?

Had this Classic Visible V-8 motorized version as a kid and have this current version unbuilt in our SWAG now. Including this for some of the younger crowd who may not know about these.

Regarding the static Pontiac engines - how about a few versions such as Tri-Power 389/421SD, RAIV, 455 HO/SD, W72 T/A 6.6, etc. with the Shakers/Trips etc. available

that model kinda looks like a SBC Pontiac hybrid with the water pump and heads

Post #2--Excellent picture of a '64 GTO 348 HP 389!! I've never seen this before. Is there somewhere we could get a high resolution source for this?

I can make a mold of a 1:1 scale engine in far less time and cost than the whole 3D printing process.

Good one. That reminds me of the cutaway engine they had made when I worked for CAT to display the internals of the 3408 twin turbo v-8. It was very satisfying to watch an engine which you had just machined & built put out 2k horses at 2k rpm in the run in room for 2 days straight.

yea right now 3D printing is good for really intricate designs, but mostly used for prototyping and then sending the prototype to get cast like 68azbird is saying

I could see it being good later on when metallic 3D printing become more mature, as you could make engine blocks and heads easily as you could just print in the cooling/oil passages with no need to get rid of the internal mold (sand or wax)

Large format 3D printing is very expensive. I had a hollow part printed about the size of my fist and the material cost alone was $72. This was high resolution photopolymer powder. The printers using "string trimmer line" (not really but it looks like it) are cheaper, but the model is very coarse and porous.

captainofiron- I've got Pontiac V8 cylinder deck dimensioned drawings sourced from Cometic. As near as I can tell, they are accurate (bore centers, head studs, and dowel pin locations). If you PM me a mailing address, I'll send you a copy (two pages).

Anyone here have familiarization with programs like Geomagic or those that can convert a 3D scan into a useable solid model? I have a 3D scan of an original RAV head that I tried to have our master CAD modelers convert, but they keep having difficulties in the version of Geomagic that we have. Willing to pass along the scan if anyone has the capability.
