I ended up running a normal HEI and an Edelbrock carb on my 81.

those pics show the vac diaphram canister, so its definitely not an 81 distributor... but need to see it from the passenger side if possible, showing the dist clamp itself & that area of the block to see the detonation sensor & possibly the date code.
the knock sensor isnt as important as seeing the front area of the intake to confirm theres a PEVR valve there. if there isnt, someone either swapped intakes or removed the pevr, which will make the car never run right while under any boost. a turbo carb engine needs some type of boost reference to enrich the fuel under boost, the PEVR does it for 1980 & the MAP sensor & mixture control solenoid does it on 81 computer controlled carbs. sorry to ask for so many pics, just trying to see what needs to be seen to get you going in the right direction. also can you say what kind of mechanical experience you have? can you do basic work on a carb'd engine like this or is it all greek to you? LOL. just trying to confirm your level of experience & knowledge before i explain things you may not understand. working on these cars is pretty basic to some but to others its not, so it helps to know that to adjust how i explain things. |

how do you account for fuel enrichment under boost with a basic E-carb? hope you have some type of boost reference before you get into any kind of boost, could cause some damage & have major detonation under boost/load.

ok if the last numbers match the vin its original to the car. now just need to verify the PEVR valve & for the heck of it where the knock sensor is... has to be in the back top of the block if its not on the intake.

still kinda sideways & too close to get a perspective of everything in that general area. but i still dont see the pevr, i do see a threaded hole with nothing in it but looks like it was there recently... thats probably the pevr location.
in the pic i sent, you can see where the lines connect to the carb from that valve (B & D), do you have anything connected there? & if so, can you follow those lines to see if they connect to anything? im thinking someone removed it because it was broken or they thought it was not needed. have you looked in the console, glove box & trunk for any extra parts? |

i just looked at your first pics of the carb closer. that is possibly not the correct carb, it doesnt look to have the ports to connect the pevr to. you need to locate a correct 1980 301t carb to get it working right.
until then do not drive the car hard or or try to build boost etc. through all rpms you have incorrect fuel mixture for a turbo engine without the pevr & right carb. i will run & drive gently ok, but get the right carb & a pevr as soon as you can. they dont make the pevr valve so you will have to locate a good used one or go to 301g & check out the member named "minita" he can rebuild them & the carb too. whoever swapped out the carb & removed the pevr did NOT know what they were doing. that is whats causing the black spots i bet & when under load/boost i bet it detonates which is not good for an engine. take it easy if you drive it untill you get it sorted out with the right carb. |

1980. your car has all 1980 electronics, fuel & emissions for the engine because it was sold in canada.

yes, was just going to post that.
& to clarify on saying yours is not the right carb, im going off what i can see in the first pics you posted of the carb, based on what i can see it doesnt have the other "D" port like the carb in the pic i showed. your carb could just be a non turbo carb & not the correct turbo carb? |

better pic, but hard to tell if that is the right 1980 turbo carb.
look at the pics in this link. your carb may be correct but i cant see the other pevr port, which is located down lower on the base plate. http://www.v8online.co.za/TransAm-301-Turbo/ |

can you get a pic of the front of the carb showing the ports on the lower base plate? need to confirm if its the correct turbo carb to get you started with the right parts for it.
