Default Spinner Cap Differences 1965

There where 2 different spinner cap details on the 1965 cap. I believe it was on the spinner itself with one style being painted and the other is not. Am I correct? Change occurred around March 1965? Thanks

I had an NOS set for my '65. There is only 1 difference that I am aware of and that is whether or not it has cooling slots. The ones without the slots are '64, perhaps early '65. The other difference I have seen has been between the original center medallion and the repops. Originals had black paint to accent the checkerboard, the repops do not. This was confirmed to me decades ago by Steve Ames and it was based on cost as to why the repops do not have the black.

As far as I know there are 2 different spinner caps with minor detail differences. I believe one has the accent black paint and the other doesn't. I saw the 2 different styles on a very original car at the Nationals this year but I wanted to confirm it and hopefully figure out which one was produced first.

The black fades. Just because they were "original" does not mean the black did not fade or the medallions were not replaced. Unless there is an original owner (young enough to actually remember) there is no way to tell. Not only did I have an NOS set for my car, I have had NOS covers here and there over the years. I will also stand on what Steve has said. As far as I am concerned, he IS the expert.

Fade? Of course that's possible but the folks I was with are very knowledgeable in the hobby. Now I'm more curious.

If I recall, the red is anodized and the black was paint. Now, why doesn't the red fade? I never figured that one out. Perhaps colored anodizing was better back then??????

Are you looking for something different than was discussed in this thread?

I forgot, there were 2 spinners. My convertible had the style spinner wheel cover while my hardtop had spinner spokes. Spinner spokes are the ones I was referring to.

Keith I'm talking about the spinner cap with cooling slots. The outstanding black Lemans convertible at the nationals had those wheel covers and I was shown the differences there. Two spinners with paint and two without and according to him it was a first design and a midyear change. Maybe it was fade but he knew much about 1965 A-bodies.

Regarding the wire spinners, and according to the information I got from Joe Maye, before he passed-
64 no slots red flags,
65 slots red flags,
66 slots red and black flags.
Joe was a wealth of knowledge, and had an extreme collection of NOS parts, but he could have been wrong about this.

Joe Maye, cool guy and had tons of knowledge on GTO’s. Wish he was still with us.

I would agree with the above information on 64-66 wire disc.

Chris.

Time to humble up. Yes Keith that's what I was talking about. I have to look more careful when reading threads on my phone screen. I owe everyone who posted a beer, wine or fancy deluxe coffee of their choice at the next Pontiac meet.

I would ask Scott Tieman as the spinner caps were what came on his Father's 65 that he recently restored.
