1972 HO Alternator Brackets and Pulley Help.
Still sorting out issues on fresh HO engine. Belts are squealing. This is an AC car and I have correct small waterpump pulley, Are the Alternator brackets special on a HO car? Are the lower crank pulley(s) special in any way? Any spacers than I need to know about?

hmmmmmmm
if it were me,,,,,,,,, I would get the wider power steering belt sand the pulley v groove where the belts ride .... scotch brite the contact edge of the new and old belts to get the glaze off and see what happens ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

Take the belt off one by one until squeal stops. If it one of those then its belt. Replace the belt and then see what happens.

Pulleys and brackets looks OK to me. Except diameter for A/C cars, I dont think there is any difference between standard and HO cars.
I agree with Scott, sand the pulley grooves. Most people have them painted/powder-coated, and then they squeal. |

There should be No washers on back of the Alternator. ( front adjusting bracket) Make sure your alternator spacer is correct.

I am aware the washers are incorrect. The issue i have is when i install long bolt with 2in spacer alternator appear to be in the correct alignment, the upper bracket as a two washer space, when I delete washers and use just bolt it cocks alternator back and belt are misaligned for sure, This is why i asked about bracket.
Tomorrow, i Will try one belt at a time, sand pulley groves, and install new belts all around. But I will have to use washers for better alignment. I searched this tread about the issue and came across explaination on smaller pulley. I have other brackets I can try, any one no the correct numbers? I was thinking of trying larger pulley and or put washer between bracket and waterpump to elimate washer up top. I also put a washer and back side bracket Thanks all

I run a ac set up ( pulleys, fan) on my Formula, I will check it tomorrow and grab a pick.

I missed the washer issue ... I have a peanut butter jar full of spacers... if you might need another length,,,
can anyone confirm 2 different width belts ? does it chirp on quik acceleration or turning the steering wheel ?? I still seem to have good luck with gates belts ?? anyone else ?? |

First picture, clear as day, the PS pump front mtg plate is mounted incorrectly.
The front mtg plate should have no spacer between it and the outboard (drivers side) mtg hole on the front of the pump. When I examine the spacer on the inboard side behind the the front mtg on the original '71-72 pump off my red car, the spacer is little over 5/8" thick. Correctly attached, the front mtg plate is parallel to the face of '71+ pump reservoir with an approx 11/16" gap between the two.

I agree there is something wrong with the PS mtg plate. The alternator and PS plate shouldnt be spread apart like that.
And the bottom part of the PS plate looks incorrect as well. Looks like its been modified?? This is what it should look like. See how the bottom part of the bracket is curved inward towards the pump where it bolts to the pump? I will take some pictures of my original 72 car at lunch. The belts are 100% aligned with originals brackets/spacers/washers/bolts. |

Removed incorrect washer, Thanks 'ol Pinion head. Scuffed pulley groves, installed new belts. rev to 4,000 rpm no squealing Can not waiting to drive home and shift more than of 2500 rpm. Thanks all for the help.

Appears to been spacer. have 125 miles on fresh engine, beautiful cool weather in Cleveland this week to break motor in nicely. and work out a few bugs.
