Cool, Keith!

Will they let make a quick withdrawal if you have withdrawals?!

Think Scott may've done the blue Mopar back there next to #8, too ...?

Yes, he did the 442 the black one, the Plymouth (blue) and the 69 trans am convert. Would you be on board with yours next year Tenny.

I think they ask for 10 days lead time but it doesn't sound like an issue.

I should be ok - I still have the Grand Prix, Chevelle, and black pickup to keep me busy! (The Grand Prix was down for a couple days and I really missed it!).

Bringing this back to the top -

The Gilmore has re-arranged a bit and moved the muscle car display into a different room.

Butchman was kind enough to send a couple photos.

I was there in the middle of October for an outdoor Blues fest and to check on things but they hadn't made the switch yet.

Keith,

I noticed the sign board lists the car's weight as 3,030 pounds which seems to be a few hundred pounds lower than what I have read about these cars in car magazine road tests road tests done back in the day.

Please comment on the car's weight.

Thanks!

P.S. Your description of the car's blemishes reminds me of when I bought my blue charcoal/ red pinstripe 65 GTO in February-1965. It had specks of red paint on the trunk lid. The dealer offered to fix it and I told them "It is part of the car. I'll drive it that way!"

FWIW, my 65 Chevelle weighs 3380 on a certified scale so there is no way an all-there stock 65 GTO weighs 350 pounds less. However, shipping weight (what the manufactures reported to the states for shipping purposes) is rarely the same, almost always lower, than the actual weight. I don't really know why. For example, the shipping weight for my Chevelle according to the AMA Specs was 3125. Our 64 GTO is most definitely heavier than my 65 Chevelle.

That weight appears on the original title.

It's not something we discussed specifically when the Gilmore ladies were making the sign so they must have picked that value off the title (which I did show them).

I don't know how Pontiac generated that number but I see it often on original documents.

You might also notice the car is titled as a Lemans, rather than a GTO. That was intentional, as it helped on insurance.

3380 is pretty good

I agree that the manufacturer shipping weight is almost always lower, which has generated a great amount of discussion in my case.

Keep in mind my car is an insulation delete, low option content, headers, and raced with no spare or jack hardware, exhaust turned down at the axle, etc.

We used to go across the scale with the towbar and safety chains installed, full tank of fuel, toolbox and set of slicks in the trunk, and me standing next to the car in order to make the weight for class.

Once we got back to the pit area all that stuff came flying out.

Keith, that is so cool of a story. I wish all these cars could talk. Every manufacture was doing some funny stuff to pass for whatever agenda they wanted.

We laughed one time watching the Ramchargers take the spare tire out - it took three guys (lol).

It was full of cement.

Kevin,

The March-1965 issue of CAR CRAFT is a test of a 65 GTO that appears to be similarly equipped as your car except that it had power brakes. They say that as tested, the car weighed 3,665 pounds with 1995 of it on the front wheels. They indicated that according to "printed material" (factory?) the GTO's weigh about 3,462 pounds. They mention that the car can be ordered without underseal or other sound deadening material which cuts about 130 pounds in total weight.

I don't recall what numbers NHRA used in classifying the 65 GTO's for "B" stock in those days. Whatever the number (pounds weight per horsepower) was, I think it was on a 10 to 1 (pounds weight per horsepower) I think it would reflect that the GTO's weighed a few to several hundred pounds more than 3,030.

Since most cars in those days were literally driven out of the plant, they weren't "dry" and had all of their fluids in them and some fuel in their tanks when shipped.

Very interesting.

I'm much closer to 3400 lbs than I am to 3660 lbs.

I was at the museum for the Oldsmobile show in August. The Olds guys were really appreciative of the 65. It's amazing how poorly the paint and body work was done originally. It just shows how over restored our cars are.
