Trying to make sense of this. Bruce Fulper's name keeps coming up in talks about good Pontiac performance engine builders. He runs a Q&A in another forum, and appears to have his own fan base. Other sites, including pontiacwarriors.com, slam him and warn others to stay away from him.

There are so few good Pontiac builders as it is. It would be a waste of a good resource if we let misinformation get in the way of us seeking help from a good engine builder.

Does anyone have experience with Bruce Fulper's work?

Fulper was invited to the GTOAA Nationals in Denver in 1996. He held a tech seminar on degreeing a cam. By the time he was finished our 360 degree wheel would have needed about another 40 degrees with his figures. That's been my only personal experience with him. I have heard many, many horror stories though very similar to the one on that web page.

A bad day fishing beats any day working...and if you can drive your GTO to get there....all the better!

I build my own engines except for the heads, and block machine work and I know that it's hard to find good competent machinest you can trust. With that said most of us have to rely on word of mouth advertising to find a good shop. I've heard enough on this forum to know that Bruce is the last person that I would trust with my stuff. There are several that I would trust, Pontiac Dude, Paul Spotts, come to mind right off the bat, never trust your pride and joy to someone that you have heard bad things about

I have heard mostly bad things about RRE. However, I was at Bristol this weekend and there were a few cars there advertising RRE engines. They ran pretty good, including a really nice 62' Catalina. Supposed to be all steel 4200+ lbs. It was running pretty consistant 10.60's or so all weekend. I met and talked with Fulper at one of the POCI nats a few years ago and I didn't really like him much. I would not have him do anything regardless of his reputation just because he seems to have such a bad attitude. Hard to say, sometimes anyone of these guys can occasionally do good or bad work.

Brakes?! We don't need no stinking brakes!

Hi, I have experience with Bruce. about two years ago I decided to redo my 65GTO again.

I knew how I wanted the car and the motor.

So I started to make phone calls. First I called
Jim Butler, and the response I got was call back
when you have Money. Same with KRE. Thats fine
and I understand these people are in Business to make money. Then I called Bruce I talked to him
for a while on the phone and told him what i wanted to do. I was looking for 600hp, low compression ( pump gas motor) set up to run NOS
If i choose. He came back with a list of parts and prices. So slowly over the next year or so
I bought parts (on his recommendation)
Some of the parts I got from him, some from Summit
He handled Machine work, head porting, and Assy.

I live in PHX, so Im not to far from his shop.
The engine would have been done sooner, but it was
me that held up things. ( Im not rich)
Anyway the engine was ready to go to the dyno.
again I held up things, I wanted to be there at the dyno to see what I have paid for.

Bruce has accommidated me in everyway, waited for money, waited for me and my scheduel.

Two weeks ago at westech performance we put my engine on the dyno

The only changes done to the motor on the dyno
were to set the timing (twice, each time 2 degreese) and to change the jets once.

On the 12th pull the engine made 650hp at 6100 Rpms and 617 torque at 4500. Not bad for a 9.8
street motor.

I am happy with my results.

Let me ask you something "travis" ......

Did you find Bruce to be an honest, straight forward, likeable guy?
Or did you think he was an arrogant,"I know better than everyone else" kind of person?

Based on his current rep, your lucky you got any engine from him. The fact that it runs at all is a major blessing. Consider yourself very fortunate.

I HAVE had personal experience with him, and would never do business with him again under ANY circumstances.

I don't care how many 350cu / 600hp motors he can build .....that guy is just a dick.

Fulper would be the last person on this earth I'd trust with my money!
I've met him and actually had him bugging me to send him money for his old 421 rag where he used others research and called it his own!
He showed up at Southern Nationals long ago with his car and conviently parked in my area where I was putting my car next to the trailer! Not a real nice guy! Had a bad attitude! But the best thing was for all his horn blowing his car wouldn't even start!
Now I'm really impressed!
Sorry but I'm not making anything up!

Usually I'm found working on my Pontiac. If you want to find me Look for the white picket fence and all the old Pontiacs parked outside. And the half dissembled engine sprawled all over the driveway!

The mystery is untangling:

I now have the 650HP tagged to 6100RPM,
rather than 4500RPM.

Travis is gonna make use of 4.10 gears...

that's it, he's out of the 3.31:1 club.

Bill, doesn't this smell like a guy with really bad hygene? The one that comes to mind is from RI. He owns this really ugly 68 GTO that he calls a race car. What do you think?

not really, just their peak power was only recently tied to 6100RPM. Here how their rev will go:

6100RPM peak HP and 4.10gears could yield 1/4Mile:
26"tire......108MPH
26.6tire.....111MPH
27"tire......113MPH
28"tire......117MPH
29"tire......121MPH

Travis is way better-off using 3.55gears to hit 10's in the 1/4mile:
26"tire......115MPH
26.6tire.....118MPH
27"tire......119MPH
28"tire......124MPH
29"tire......128MPH

..I could be generalizing a bit.

Uhm,

Don't yet know the Travis vehicle scale weight. Do hear 650Crankshaft HP. (I guess about 550RearwheelHP)
Choose a MPH above that corresponds to YOUR expectations of the Travis Trap speed.

See tire size for anticipated trap speed, for a 6100RPM trap tach.

Optional: ponder tire and gear selection, on your own combo, for a given peak HP.
