Make bigger steps than you think you should in your low VE combo.

I think Ive narrowed the roller choices to the Howard’s 414345-12 227/237 .560/.560
or the Butler BP8020-12 224/.503/.510

HFT options summit 2802, Lunati 703, or a modern RA3 or RA4

I’m a bit confused. OP says it’s a .040 over 400. That comes out to about 410, the way I figured. Where did the 428 come from?

In his first post in his parts list he says he's running a 4.00" stroke crank.

If your looking for some lope at idle that Bulter cam listed is a size to small, I think you would like the 230/236 with the 112 LSA quite a bit better. But over all, I think that Howard’s 414345-12 is still a better cam, and you don’t need a $160 composite distributer gear to use it. Add that to the cost of the Butler cams.

Butler’s 8020 is a comp 224/230 with the LSA spread out to 112 instead of 110. You have mentioned the 703 Lunati several times, the standard comp 224/230 with it’s 110 LSA and Lunati 703 are about as close to each other as you can find jumping from a flat tappet to a HR. With a 4” crank, and widening the LSA out 112 from 110 both those cams will have almost dead smooth idles (which is fine if that is what you’re looking for). Even a Bullet HFT 280/288, 232/240, .500/.500 with the 112 LSA would nearly have a smooth idle in your 4” combo. It has similar ramp accelerations to a Lunati Voodoo flat tappet. I have done that 280/288 cam with 3.07 gears and a th400 with a 9:1 compression 455, stock heads with RA manifold, it barely lopes. In fact it had a 068 cam with 1.65s in it before the Bullet, and there is hardly a differences in the idle and street manors with the bigger cam, but it seemed like it gained 40 HP. I am a fan of those Bullet Ultradyne grinds (Skip mentioned them to, the ones he mentioned are a little older designs than what I just referred too) . They are great HFT cams, but I would still prefer a well chosen roller.

Bullet has some designs I would pick over the Howard’s, but I am not sure they stock the core that can use the stock gear. Probably could order it though.

Funny, I talked to Tim Goolsby and he recommended a 222/230 with .530 lift on both for my combo. I’ll probably go 110 with the Howard’s. Are the Howard’s lifters Morels?

The 110* version of the Howard’s will be a lot easier to find than the 112* version.

Howard’s lifters are usually Morels. Howard’s uses some Gaterman lifters for a few platforms.

I have a 224/230, 110 LSA comp HR. The Bullet cam Tim recommend is a bit bigger than the 224/230 compcams, that Bullet has almost as much seat timing as the bigger Howard’s.

I recall I spec’d out a Bullet HR cam for a 4” stroker with stock D ports and RA manifolds with the same profile Tim suggested, it was 234/240 with a 112 LSA. Drivetrain was a lot different though.

Bullet said like $630 and I can buy the Howard’s for $499. I am concerned about the 4/7 BS though.

I have a 4/7 swap on bullet HR that I bought probably 15 years ago . I really can’t remember if that’s all that was available at the time or what but Tim had it available with a cast iron gear . Does it do anything or even sound different ? I have no idea lol I just have to remember that 4 & 7 swap if I mess with the distributor .and I haven’t screwed up yet lol it’s a 226/230 @.050 280/284 in a 406 and runs fantastic .

"The car is a street and highway cruiser only with A/C and power brakes, needs to have good manners. I’m a stock performance type of guy. But want it to pull all the way to 5500."

One of the easiest scenarios,

That Crane cam would do as expected, not break the bank and is a older production set of parts perhaps cutting chances of break'in drama,

That’s smaller than the 068 they put in a 428 from the factory.
