Default Convertible header bow replacement

Hi Guys, Just currious what the current consensus is with the convertible header bows? this was touched on in another post a while back: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ghlight=header

The problem is, I pulled my convertible top apart this weekend, & the header is pretty bad. The top skin that creates the seam that is the front leading edge of the top, is pretty thin & is missing in a few spots. Its pretty rusty. I never knew this intil I removed the fabric. I know many say to fix the original becasue it fits better, but how much work is it to make the re-pops fit? If the re-pops can be purchased for $400 & only need an hour or two of re-work, I think I would rather go that way unless they just fit really bad. The original header I currently have is so rusted, I think I would have at least 2 days of fab to try & repair it, & I am not sure how nice it can be again.

Any thoughts or input?

Thanks, 68RT

I purchased a new one about 10 years ago from Tamraz ($400.00), the fit was good - haven't had any problems with it.

I found a good used one for $125 a few years ago. I see them for sale every so often on ebay and I believe that all the 68-72 a-body headers are the same so it opens up your options a little.

Just thought I would add a follow up, I bought one of the $400 repops. Not the best in my opinion. But I am pretty fussy. Had to cut it in a few places, re-shape, bend, etc. Alignment pin, not in the right place, tack strip area too thick, I could keep going...... I have about 4-5 hours in it so far & have more to do. I should have looked harder for a good used one if there is such a thing...

Those are very hard to find good used now, the cars are so old. You and about 100 or so other people could be looking for one all at the same time. Water and debris get trapped underneath the vinyl over time and the moisture has nowhere to escape. So it just sits there and rusts the metal. It is not like GM put a lot of etch primer or black paint on those to begin with.

I know, you're right about that one. I'm just a little frustrated with how poorly this repop fits for the heafty $400 price tag.
