Default 68 water temp switch type?

I've got a two male connector water temp switch and the wire slides on vertically. Apparently it's not the correct one for my '68 with rally gauges. My gauge jump when I turn the key on but doesn't read the temp at all afterwards. I've been told I need a single nail head type, that slides the wire on from the side. Is that right?

Anybody got one that works?

Default Temperature sender for rally gauges

The sender in your photo is for a red warning light, not a gauge. You need the sender for a gauge. The original sender for your Firebird had a single vertical tab on it. (A Very rare and expensive part.) Later serviced by the one with the brass "mushroom" top to which the plug slides on at a 90 degree angle.

NOTE: (The modern replacement sender from GM, part #12334869 will cause the gauge to read, in error, from between 15 and 20 degrees higher on the dial than actual.)

I believe this sender with the single vertical tab for rally guages was used from 67 thru 69. Maybe Peter will let us know if that is incorrect.

I believe the mushroom or nail head top will work if you cannot find the correct one.

Pete, since you're on this...I have a piggyback question. My new '68 gauge for the idiot light comes on when the car is cold and goes off when it reaches normal operating temperatures. I have no idea if it will come back on when it's supposed to but I don't see how it could.
Know anything about that? It is a two pronged like the one shown in this thread.

Default Water temp sending switch

Just went ahead and ordered one. It's suppose to read accurately. Although not identical to original style, it's close enough. It's the one on the left, factory sender on right. I'll update after it's installed. Sorry about the crappy picture.

Just for future reference, Pete explained the two-pronged type usage. They were originally used for cars that have a green 'cold' lamp and a red 'hot' lamp.
When used on a car that only has the red 'temp' lamp, if the lamp comes on initially and goes off as the car comes up to temp, as mine did, it's on the 'cold' prong. Switch it over to the other prong.

Default Water temp sending switch

Installed new aftermarket temp sending switch. The sender read accurately (+ or - the Rally gauge tendencies) and looks close to original too.
