That is the same as my old SD. The little "plug" just behind the power switch, gives access to insert a wrench to manually operate the roof if power is lost.

Anyone with a '73 SD auto know what the stock secondary metering rods are in the carb? I've been tweaking my carb and distributor a little bit and I'd like to compare it to what they originally came with.

I can look that up when I get home. I know I have that information somewhere. BTW - changing the metering rods was a known performance upgrade right from day 1 on these engines. For my car, on the original sales invoice, the salesman wrote right on the invoice what rods the original owner should order from the parts dept. (He never made the change).

For 1973 SD Carb:

Sec Rod
BV

P/N
7040724

Dia of Tip
0.0300

Tip Length
S

This seems to be a good secondary rod?
Most had a huge tip, making it lean at full throttle.

The short tip may have some problem, but not sure on that.

Thank you Frank and John! I suspected it was a BV. Mine is not. If any one has a lead on where to find a set I would appreciate the help!

The 7040724 is the original part number, might be able to see if Edelbrock or maybe GM has it.

Edelbrock was carrying a lot of parts for the QJet.
But not sure if this one would be.

Thanks John, I'll check around for that part number.

I also looked at the website:

http://quadrajetparts.com/used-quadr...67-p-2097.html

Unless I am reading it wrong, it appears the BVs are some of the richest rods out there. Am I misunderstanding that? The thing I do like about the short tip is it really seems to easy in the secondaries well without that bog that sometimes can occur.

The CC rods were the hot tip a long time ago, maybe because you couldn't get anything richer than the smog rods then available?

That site had them:

CC rods

I usually chucked a rod that was similar to the CC in a drill and sanded down the tip and some on the angle to get what I needed.

Usually made a huge improvement.
(along with some other tuning)

Just and FYI to anyone considering the CC's for their SD, Cliff Ruggles advises against them. Below is what he told me and I thought I'd pass on the Info should anyone else be in a situation for restoring or tuning their carbs.

"CC’s are HORRIBLE in those carbs, small/long tips but really fat on the upper section, we avoid them."

I'm getting some stock BV's and a hair richer CB's from him. He can also machine up a set on his lathe too if anyone needs a set for their beast.

I have always had to remove the filter adapter and lower the starter to remove them and in a timely manner for any cast iron header. Sometimes you can jack the engine up high enough one side at a time after you remove the long mount bolt to get them out if you don't have ac

Default '73 SD Fuel Pump

Good morning guys, I am new to the forum and new to the SD world...I have had several 1973 T/A's over the last 30 yrs or so and finally clawed, scraped and traded my way into my dream car...a 1973 Buccaneer Red SD. I have enjoyed it this last year and I am collecting pieces and parts for a future complete restoration. But for now I'm having a blast driving it around...
I believe the fuel pump just went south on me and I am looking for a good quality replacement to drive around with on today's gas...any suggestions on a direction or specific pump for this motor would be greatly appreciated! I am sure I will tap the knowledge of this group in the future as I am not the most mechanically inclined guy, I have some questions on this car and I look forward to making it as close to original as I can. Thanks in advance,
CLW

Its the "big Can type" There are some by airtex and others, make SURE its brand new and mentions it can handle alcohol. I bought one recently from ebay because it had the info about new materials on. I think Orileys has the good ones too. Welcome to PY
