Default A GTO in Newfoundland...

I've been streaming old TV series, and came across one called "Republic of Doyle", which takes place in Newfoundland, and is it's version of Magnum PI. A guy and his dad are PI's, and the younger one has a Nordic blue 68 GTO which is super nice, with redlines, and he uses it as his everyday beater! One of the first episodes some kid "tagged" it with graffiti!
Kind of a show you can't watch much of though, as the story lines are weak.

Column shift. You will cringe later in the first season, not just from the story lines. Been watching it lately too.

Over 40 years ago, I had the pleasure of spending about a year living in St. John's Nfld, long before this show was filmed. This was obviously before the oil boom changed Newfoundland, but at that time a Private Eye would have starved to death from boredom. I will have to look for this show just for old times sake, but if you see a reference to Kings Bridge Road near the waterfront, that is where I rented a "flat" in a beautiful old house.

Prior to the oil patch, St. John's claim to fame was Signal Hill where Marconi received the first transatlantic telegraph. The folks there were great, still a hell of a culture shock for a Texan and nary a Pontiac, let alone a GTO, in sight.

That's where I was born and raised. This Orbit Orange Ram Air IV 4-speed Judge was cruising the streets in a white re-paint at exactly the same time you would have been in St. John's.

These screen shots are from this video of some street action on a sunny sunday afternoon in 1978 at the Memorial Stadium parking lot - note cop car hanging out. Good times.

I can remember two movies with GTO's in it. Day and Knight and The Punisher. Probably much more. Someone should start a thread for movies and tv shows which feature GTOs and Firebirds, (Bandit, Rockford, etc.)

We got there just before Christmas in 1978. Some of our office had been pre-established by a local customs broker, PF Collins, who graciously hired us a great lady as secretary/"real" office manager (my title). She didn't know me from Adam, but invited me to her home to have Christmas dinner with her family, a memory I will always cherish.

Didn't see many sunny days those first few months and when operations were in full swing it was mostly dawn to dark with many late nights. It would have been a pleasure to have seen the GTO you pointed out, but it would only have been pure chance anyway. Shout out to all Newfies. Thanks for posting

I will have to check it out, I wonder if it was originally a Canadian car? this picture shows not only Column shift automatic, but it has a A/C dash as well

It's a clone made from a Texas LeMans, I know the car. The other car (there were two) "might" be real GTO.

I just watched 3 episodes. They move along, car is nice, neat scenery. But the main character is such an arrogant jerk I had to stop watching. In real life, somebody would clean his clock the way he behaves.

He gets punched in the nose about every episode and usually deserves it.
