How far away from the engine should I place the dumps so I do not harm anything? I have a stock olds 403 in my 79 Ta

Normally run right before the muffler, just make sure they are not pointing on any fuel lines, brake lines, or starter or anything that doesn't need the extra heat. I would dump them somewhere around or a little behind the tranny if possible. The biggest key is to point them down and out away from the drivers compartment and they will kick up a lot of dust on the right surface.

I was planning on putting them right after the downpipes from the manifolds. Behind the starter and transmission. They would point out towards the street.

Sounds like a good place, just remember heat will kill your starter if its too close. It will also kill your tranny quicker. Good luck on it.
