Everyone's opinion please. I'm about to bolt up Doug's Headers on my 455. They came with a great looking set of Byson Gaskets. Was wondering if it's necessary to use hi temp silicone at all. What brand and temp rating if so.

I know your going to get a bunch of different opinions....but. I use a little of the copper silicone. Its ultra-high heat, and seems to work very well. Just make sure the head surface is very clean..

I never use any type of sealer and never have header leaks....WHY?....because to insure that there are no header leaks I have the mating area on the heads re-surfaced.
Just as one would have the heads resurfaced before installing on a short-block, the same should be done on the exhaust flange of the heads for proper seal of headers.

i have used a combination of soaking the fiber gaskets and hi-temp silicone. with one or the other i would always have a leak here or there. the combination of both worked for me. install , run to temp and re-tighten the bolts. let set for silicone to set up.

Was also wondering if you put the silicone on both sides of gasket.

Well, let me correct myself. I use copper silicone on MY header gaskets. I know if you buy the high dollar headers, you shouldnt have to. They have a nice, thick, flat flange, so there is none required. But on my beat up, dented, rusty, ten year old Hookers, they are a must...

I have Doug's Headers installed on my Pontiacs and agree with Larry re not using silicone sealer, in spite of Doug's installation instructions.

Yes, I use it on both sides of the gasket.
Kind in mind, even with thick header flanges it's the port work on the heads (exhaust) that causes the sealing to fail.
My 6X's have a very narrow sealing area, the only thing that cured gasket blowout is the High Temp Red sealer.BTW; I prefer Mr. Gasket Ultra seal header gaskets.
