I keep reading conflicting information. Most of it says that Pontiac did not use the letter "I" for casting dates (to avoid confusion with the number 1) so J would follow H. Some other information says "I" was used. I have an 09C '66 GTO, so what should my correct casting dates be, I or J?
thanks, Ed |

Hey Ed,
They used the "I" in every year of the 60's except 1966, for 1967 models. So anything cast in Sept. '66 would have a "J" for the 9th month. If your car was built in the 3rd week of Sept. '66, most of your parts would have been cast in July, Aug. or Sept. as most engine and accessories will be dated anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months before the build date. Here's a link to some good written info on that date code. http://www.teufert.net/identify/identify.htm Hope that clears it up, Rick

thanks Rick, that explains it all. I should have mentioned my GTO is a '66 model, 09C (Sept'65), so I guess I'm looking for the elusive "I" castings (in addition to H or possibly G).
