Flexplate differences
I need to buy a flexplate for a 400 crank. How do I know which one? There is an earlier one and a later one. The hole in the middle is bigger? What year was the change or what casting numbers?

Measure the crank register for the hole in the middle . Will be 2.5 or 2.75.
Then there are "internal balance" if a shop did it possibly or the factory "external balance" that has one hole missing.

Also early ones only have 3 converter holes. Later ones have 6 holes. Early torque converters have mounting hole farther out from the center. The ones with 6 holes will fit everything though later converters had metric bolts and the holes will have to be enlarged slightly.

I found out about this the wrong way while doing a 400 install on a friends car. Of course we had the wrong flexplate and had to rush ship another one to finish the job except I had to fly home and couldn't stick around for the first drive.
