Yes, adjusters on all 4 wheels. I've spent a lot of time in the last 50 years replacing brake lining on GM, as well as ford, and chrysler cars, never saw a system like you're alluding to.

Without adjusters the brakes won't work, because the 2 shoes need to be connected together under the wheel cylinder to exert pressure equally on the inside of the drum. I have no idea how you could operate internally expanding brakes without an adjustment device to compensate for lining wear. Some are automatic adjusters, and some are manual, depending upon year, and manufacturer, but drum brakes need some type of adjusters, else the pedal would descend to the floor as the lining wears and the distance between the drum and the lining increases.

Maybe you could show a picture of the brakes without an adjuster to be more clear?

Are you referring to the lack of an adjusting access slot on the backing plate? Some GM cars had the slot on the outboard face of the drum itself. May have to remove the wheel to see it.

Is this the part that you’re missing? I’m not sure if they are available new anymore for the fronts.

Thumbs up

Here are some images from the SM.
All of the Hold Down Kits, Springs, Adjusters, and other related Hardware should be readily available from most major parts suppliers.

Default 66 gto front brakes

the picture Singleton listed is exactly what I'm missing. All new adjuster kits have new style actuator link that won't work on my setup. Anybody have a right and left 4 sale?

I looked thru my pile of brake parts and I don't have any. But with all the disc conversions that many 64-67 owners install, there should be plenty of those pieces around. Try posting in the appropriate Parts Wanted section, I'm sure someone will respond

Can I make a suggestion? Go with disc brakes, at least up front. I got my kit from Scarebird and installed it myself. Best thing I've done to my 66 GTO. You use the drum spindles. No having to change them out. With disc brakes there's no more adjusting the fronts. BTW, my 66 didn't have adjusters up front for the drums. I have everything for the front drums off my car, including adjusters I bought, for sale.

Go with the dual master cylinder. Get that from PirateJack.com. Make sure to tell them if you have power or non-power brakes. I can add photos if you want to see the dual master cylinder set up with no power brakes.

Just so it doesn't screw someone up, the Pontiac Service manual diagram shows the left hand brake assembly and incorrectly says it is a right assembly. Secondary shoe goes to the front on both sides.
