Pulling Ford engine- with trans or without?
I posted this on the Ford site, but no replies.
I’m pulling the 221 V8 out of my ‘62 Mercury. Just wondering if it’s easier to pull with the transmission attached to the engine, like I always do on my GM engines. I’ll be doing it pretty much by myself from the looks of it. Transmission is a 2speed auto. I’ll be taking radiator and fan off first. The transmission just looks a little longer than the GM transmissions I’m used to, so figured I’d ask before I get any farther into it. Anybody got any idea? Thanks!

My son and I pulled the 221 out of his '62 Meteor with the FordoMatic attached, and lowered a 289 with C4 back into it.
[I've also had poor luck with Ford forums. People here seem much more helpful]

Perfect info.
I usually pull the transmission with the engine, but it looks like I’d have to stand this one at about a 70 to 80 degree angle to get it out. I remember a few years ago you mentioned you or your son had a Meteor. Still have that engine? Mine is probably fine just been smoking pretty bad the last couple years and I hear what I think is the start of a bearing noise, so time to pull and inspect. Thanks!

I've done it both ways on my '65 Mustang; either one works fine. Don't forget to plug the tailshaft if you pull the transmission with the engine (you probably already knew that). Additionally, if you only pull the engine, remember that Ford torque converters have studs, so you have to line them up well before dropping the engine in.

It always seemed like more work to me to have to disconnect the transmission from the engine in the car - I'd pull them as a unit.

Thanks guys. Yeah didn’t know that one either. This is my first Ford product engine pull

Yep, be careful, and make sure to tighten the bellhousing bolts first. I put a nut on one of the studs once to hold it in place, and I pulled the converter out of engagement with the front pump. Of course, I started the engine without knowing and took the front pump out. Oops!

The 221 is still here with a dropped valve. But it's repairable and too rare to just scrap it.
[Did I say 289? We put in a 302]
