Default 69 Invoices some with & some without Key Codes ?

PY member wants to get PHS for his car to have the key codes.
He already has the Factory Buildsheet for the car.
I happened to notice that a LOT of 69 Invoices do not have Key Codes on them.
Never noticed this before.

So we are trying to see if we can determine if it will be worthwhile for him to buy the PHS to get the key codes.

His car is from Arlington Plant - built March 2nd Week
i have found a March 27 and April 11 Arlington Invoices and those have the key codes.

Anyone have an Arlington Invoice dated around March 15 - March 23

Feb Arlington = no key codes
June Arlington = no key codes

A lot of the Baltimore, Framingham and Fremont have no codes.

Around what VIN is a 'March' car? (R144xxx ?)

Are you using the date at the on the PHS for the 2nd week March?

You realize that if you have the keys a good locksmith can just read them off ? It is not difficult. Think there used to be only about 5,000 combinations used and remember seeing a chart of codes vs cuts.

Maybe Sprint can provide some of the latter part of his VIN
His trim tag body build date is 03B - Arlington
That would be body build-out from between March 8 - March 14

Potential Invoice dates could really be from March 10 - March 20 range.
Anything from mid-March timeframe would be helpful
Even an early March Invoice would be helpful

I have a late Feb Arlington Invoice - without key codes.

Some people might be sensitive to providing this info. Me not so much as anyone can see vins and license plate numbers anytime cars are in public.

Baron, your friend has a car that is right on the line. The key codes were added as of March 21st 1969 billing date regardless of which plant built a car, with the following exception...

Starting on March 21st all invoices for newly produced cars have key codes on the invoice, the distinction is that second or later invoices on cars built before mid march won't have the key codes. This distinction relates primarily to zone cars, if a car was built say in february and billed out to a zone office and then later reinvoiced say in May even that second invoice won't have the key codes. I guess the plants started supplying the keycodes to the billing office on cars built that third week of March so later invoices on earlier cars couldn't include key codes for the simple reason that billing didn't have them.

I guess this was done for dealers to make life easier if keys were lost in transit or even while in dealer inventory. I don't know how easily those codes on the PHS are translated into the 6 cuts needed on each key but I'd imagine that the conversion tables have survived in cyber space.

Strange, I don't have any around R148xxx

Here is what I have closest to it:

R1465xx - no key codes - Date Shipped: 3/10/69
R1523xx - key codes - Date shipped: 3/25/69

So 2 week span they changed it or used it?

no invoices dated March 19th or before have key codes
all invoices March 21st or later have key codes except obvious "re-invoiced" zone cars that were built before 3rd week March

This is the identical situation in all six plants.

Outstanding information on this topic, North.
Thank You very much !

Sprint had posed the question in another thread, in another section.
I was about to answer him -yes - it will have the codes on PHS.
But luckily i double checked to be sure, and found variations.
So started a new thread here about it.
Never noticed it before at all.

Wow, Sprints car is really going to be near the cusp with a 1486xx VIN.
Could go either way , but might be leaning more towards No key code.
Good Luck , Sprint

Thanks to everyone for the input on this subject. I'll order the PHS on the car and see what it says. The PHS will be an added documentation to the car whether it has the key codes on it or not. I'll report back when I get it. Being that I'm on the cusp it will be interesting to see what comes back. It might also help document the cutoff date.

And if you feel so inclined by all means send me a copy of your PHS for the database I have (now past 1,100!

By the way, going by your name on here I assume you’ve got a Sprint? I’ve got one, midnight green 4spd 69 Firebird ragtop.

North I'll do that.

Yes I have three sprints. 68 auto converted to 4 spd. With weber side drafts. A 69 Coupe 3 spd. My first car and 69 convertible auto. All firebirds. I've owned many Pontiacs over the years. The 69 GTO I now have is my first GTO so I'm very excited to be a part of that club now.

Here is mine. Oddly optioned car in that it was built without power steering, brakes or top but it had the stereo, 8 track, F70 fiberglass redlines, wood wheel, console soft ray glass, wood shift knob etc
