Disk brake spidles from drum brake spindles!
well I asked a few people on here about using my drum brake spindles on my 72 lemans to use for disk brake spindles. I have to say it was the easiest thing to do! Forget paying crazy amounts for new spindles just use your drum spindles, they just need some simple machine work. I haven't seen any good pictures of the setup done so i have taken a few from far and I will take some close ups later on to show what exactly needs to be machined just buy the dust plate and caliper brakets and a 400-500 dollar brake conversion cost ya about 80-100 bucks EASY!!!! there is the before pictures to show my old drums.

last time I checked, the caliper brackets were $110+ and the dust plates were at least $50, so your estimate is low. the machine work is nothing, but sometimes that upper bolt hole size is wrong and must be tapped as well. This conversion is well known. Lots of people do not have access to a good machine shop or those they do have want an arm and a leg for this simple work.

CPU has caliper brackets for $50/pair.
But I agree with engineer. Estimate 80-100 is still very low... and the bolt/tap thing Brake kits can be had with all new parts for as low or lower than all the parts separately (~500 once you get all new bearings, calipers, discs, hoses, etc....) An advantage could be to have local waranty on parts, and know exactly which parts you're getting, who makes them, and which year/model they actually came from.

brakes
ok well guys I was just posting to help anyone who may need a little visual help (like myself). I wasn't able to find the photos i needed to help me understand what needed to happen. This was just to help out, I am new to py but you guys have all helped me through this whole rebuild and I thought I should give back a bit. So any ways if you still want some visual aids here they are. the upper mounting boss needs to be machined down so that when the caliper bracket is bolted in it is flush. I got the dust plates and caliper brakets for $75.00, from hotrodusa. and the machine work was done for $20.00, simple bridgeport milling. anyways hope i helped anyone who needed it.

also for the top mount for the bracket, i just got a grade 8 bolt that was shorter to make up the difference. works great! In the picture the old bolt is just holding it in place but you get the idea

drum to disc
What calipers, rotors, bearings did you use?
Did you change the booster, master cylinder, proportioning valve? What was your total part cost involved? Are you happy with the results, performance? I have a 67 GTO with drum brakes and want to change to disc soon. Thanks very much! |
