Default Car Hauler Trailer Length

What is the best length of trailer if hauling a '67 GTO? 21 footer seems to be plenty of room, an 18 footer or less seems too short. Anyone who has one, what advice can you give?

Thanks

I have an 18' open trailer that works fine. For an enclosed trailer I would go with a 24' minimum.

My open trailer has 18' runways and is 24' long overall. I used to have a 15/21 and that was okay but I prefer the longer one.

Even the crazy short u-haul trailers will pull a car, the extra space allows you to locate the vehicle on the trailer in a way that is comfortable for towing. Also a longer tounge to axle distance makes it easier to back up. Short wheelbase trucks and long wheelbase trailers back up very well, long wheelbase trucks travel the highways better however.

Always go the biggest you can. For an open a 20ft/21ft deck, for a Enclosed at least a 28ft box.

I have a 24' enclosed, works great. Open trailers are much easier to tow. Depends on your intended use.

I use an 18 for my 66 GTO. Hauled a full size Chevy van with it a couple times, and also a Jeep Wagoneer.

Same. Anything smaller than an 18' open and you're limited as to weight distribution. Anything beyond a 24' enclosed will be beyond safe limits for a half-ton pickup I'd say, need a 3/4 ton and more power/gear.

If it's feasible, get a fifth wheel trailer instead of a bumper hitch. If your hauling a car with a fifth wheel trailer placement of the car on the trailer is much less critical than a bumper hitch. A fifth wheel tows and stops and has virtually no sway problems.

It may not be feasible for you to have a fifth wheel trailer, but it's something to consider. I have a ex cab dually diesel I use for hauling and I have trailers with inverted fifth wheel hitches (the fifth wheel is on the trailer, instead of in the bed) with only a pin in the bed of the truck. Frees up the bed of the truck and almost no one can hook to your trailer and steal it and the contents.

An 18 foot IMO would be fine for hauling a GTO, if you anticipate hauling land yachts or trucks a 20-21 may be a better choice.

Saw a piece on one of the half hour mechanic shows that there is now a company that makes wheels to adapt 19.5 commercial tires to light duty trailers. That would virtually eliminate all the blowout problems associated with light duty trailers. They showed the cross section of the tires side by side and the difference was eye opening to the sidewall construction.

I have a 16 or 18' wood deck car hauler, and it's always been fine for me. I've hauled numerous T/A's, a BMW, and even a square body Chevy truck.

20-22 ft is great. I borrow a friend's 22 ft R&R aluminum open trailer and it pulled my 69 GTO (3900#'s) like a dream behind a 1/2 truck. I've owned a steel 20' footer and behind the same truck wore me out. Weight is the biggest issue on a light duty truck. I never had a 3/4-1 ton yet I believe it would pull a heavier trailer more comfortably. HTH, Mike...

I have an open trailer with an 18' deck and an enclosed that is 28' plus a few more feet for the V nose inside.

The 18' has been plenty long for anything I have needed to tow. An A-body fits with plenty of room. My Bonneville wagon still fit fine, but the back would hang off a little bit so I could get it balanced how a like.

I've even had a 3/4 ton Dodge Extra cab on it, but that was a bit overloaded.

The enclosed is actually a bit bigger than I would like. It has plenty of room inside, but the trade off comes when you need to maneuver it into a tight gas station. It can be a bit much in tight spaces.

18' is fine, I went with 20'. I believe your wheelbase is just short of 10'.

What is the towing capacity of the vehicle you are pulling it with ?

What is the curb weight of your vehicle ?

Deduct the curb weight of your towed vehicle from the maximum tow capacity of your tow vehicle - what is leftover is the maximum empty curb weight of the trailer you can safely tow.

That is where you start.

Jim

A picture of OP's tow rig.

Seriously though, I think that we all are working under the assumption that the OP has a properly capable tow rig to pull the loads we're talking about.

I have a 22' enclosed. Gives me a little room to move around in front of the car.

Lightbulb Never Assume

Occasionally I haul .... different cars.

Sometimes I have to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevents me from
publicing sharing details or images - these cars are pretty much custom.

Last Monday I was contracted to transport what was represented to be a 1969
Charger from one of the Fast & Furious films - it was to be picked up in
California preferably yesterday when the Seller was flying in from France.

I asked for a footprint ( length - width - height - weight ) along with an image.

I got this in a reply ....

Again - I asked for a footprint and the reply was " not too worry It will fit in
your trailer according to the Seller ".

I told them " I doubt it " ....

So I did a little looking & that led me to discover this ....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGeju_67Res

I told them I wasn't driving from Las Vegas, NV to California to pick up
without a confirmed footprint - so they car builder was contacted.

That car is 93 inches wide ....

Never assume anything ....

Default 20 footer

I have 2- 20 foot enclosed trailers. I have had my 66 GTO conv and 4 bikes in front of it. Pull with F150 Ford. Does ok. One trailer is blunt front and 2nd trailer is V-nose, V-nose is way nicer pulling in any wind. Also consider cornering , parking and storing trailer. Good luck.

Default trailer

I use my '02 Dodge Cummins 4x2 to pull my 18-foot trailer w/my '65 GTO. Works fine. A winch on the trailer can come in handy also.

I have a homebuilt open trailer. Dad and I built this trailer in 1967 to haul the GTO (I don't think the GTO has ever been on it).
