Hopefully someone can help out with this one. We bought a 64 GTO. One of the previous owners dropped in a 461 stroker (built from a 1973 Pontiac 400 block). I went to change the oil today, and over 9 quarts of oil drained out. Why so much oil, I have no idea! The dipstick looks wrong for starters. It is a newer build. Runs great. Strong motor.

It has a Canton oil pan that measures 8” deep, 8.25” wide, and 10” long.(Sump). It’s gold colored. It must be an older pan, because I can’t find anything like it anywhere. Nothing with those dimensions on Canton’s website, Summit, Jegs, etc. I’m going to call Canton tomorrow to see if they can help me identify it.

If they can’t help, how can a figure out the right oil capacity. I’m guessing it should be around 6-7 quarts. It’s sitting on jackstands until I can find out how much oil to put in it. I don’t want to get it wrong. Thanks for the help.

Unless your seriously road racing the car I would slowly prime the filter before screwing it on then add 7 qts of oil then make a mark on the dip stick, then add another Qt of oil ( 8 total ) make another new mark and call it a day.

This what I have done a few times and no doubt others also.

I have the Canton 15-400 pan on my low 10 second bracket car and I have always put in 7 quarts total with a new filter. Always ran it like this and never had an issue.

Oil pan should have a number on it.

From the Butler site:

We recommend a 1/8-1/4" oil pan to pickup clearance. Must be checked with all pumps and pickups regardless of oil pan.

With the deeper pan, I would make sure the correct pickup is there. With the upgrades I suspect it is, but...

If it is correct, Try Steve's method. I would say it is an 8 quart pan so don't leave it at 6 quarts.

Damn that’s a lot of oil. My Canton Road race pan calls for 6 plus filter.

I would not run 1/8" on anything.
Steffs recommends 3/8 to 1/2".

Agree with the above.
Minimum 3/8”.
Besides the restriction of running 1/8” if the pan takes a minor hit your done.

It will either block the pickup or break the pickup loose even if the tube is tack welded to the pump body.
