In other words, if the rectangular ones are the wrong ones for the A/C cars, I MUST have a new set of rectangular ones around here that I bought from PY years ago and couldn't use.

EDIT...BREAKING NEWS...
lol.. This photo proves it to me now. This is a pic of the new pair I got from PY years ago. They are the rectangular type. Don't know where they are now. If I find the new ones, I'll send one of those instead of the rusted one. Still don't know why I would have pulled an original in a junkyard somewhere unless I mistakenly thought...uh, heck, I don't know.
Posting pic for 68ragtop...

For visuals, I found an old pic I sent to Ames when I was doing my dash. I also found a broken square clip to compare next to the rectangle one. I remember thinking I could enlarge the hole on the dash, but I didn't because there's not enough room between the top of the cut and the bend on the top of the dash to fit the rectangle clip. Maybe you could go horizontally?

vs. a non-A/C dash. You can see the location of the punch out is lower providing more room the clip

I think I could work with that. Maybe 1/16" off the top of the hole and rest off the bottom. Since the rectangular clip has about twice the width that grabs the pin it shouldn't be a problem if it's offset a bit.

Or horizontally as you suggest might be the way to go. The pin has the groove all the way around so it wouldn't care if the clip is vertical or horizontal.

I notice AMES is still selling the rectangular ones with no caveat that they are non-AC only. You think they would reap the benefits of customer knowledge and put a note in their catalog.

Thanks for the excellent photos.

Since the dash is metal, lots of options for modification.

Yes, those pics are just what I needed to un-confuse me. Good point about the fact that there is some wiggle room with where the round headed stud goes on the long one. It might work.
Also, they made hundreds of thousands of those things probably. I expect you could find some in the classifieds like I did... I got a pair from Bob Vidan.

I didn't realize there were two types. Keep on learning....
I have one factory & one repop clip in mine. Non-A/C rectangular style.

If he doesn't you might try to contact Kurt, aka '68GTOMN'. He hardly ever posts any more but I know he lurks and he is a hardcore '68 collector.
