Could barely make it through the first page of this before tears started welling up.....some crazy deals at times I would have figured deals like that didn’t exist.

First Pontiac was a 71 LeMans sport ragtop. Bought it January/February 1988, my sr year in HS, for $1500. Had to sell a road bike i built from the frame out, even laced the wheels, to fund the purchase. Tired 350 2bbl, 350 auto on the column. Told a guy I used to work with about it, said he had one similar about 5 years earlier. When I showed it to him turns out it was same car. He said a former Washington Redskin owned it before him.

2nd was a 70 Firebird Esprit in 1990 for $1000. Originally 350 2bbl that somebody dropped a 400 4bbl / 400 trans in it. Had a shop bay paint job, white over the original Atoll blue, even the ralleys ( 14x7s that I traded for 15x7s....derrrr ) got painted white. It also had a later Camaro spoiler that I eventually corrected. Guy that had it before me, never met him, but he was a member of Team Green. Some months later I’m going through the back of the dash and stashed up there was a 35mm film can, packed full with green.

March of 1993 a 1970 GTO hardtop, $300. Complete, minus engine/trans. I spent my spring break from college tearing into it, my first “restoration” project. If anybody recalls, that was the big east coast snowstorm, and I was out in the snow tearing it apart. Still have it, at a friends house, and we’re debating on putting it together and selling as a driver or just loading all the stuff for it inside and selling that way.

Last one, 2004, 1969 GTO ragtop for $12000. I had more dollars than sense in that deal. Driver, and I drove it around here and there for about 4 months. Went to change the timing chain, noticed it was way sloppy when replacing fuel pump, and found the crank had an endplay of ohhhh, 1/4”? That was the end of that and apart it came....still have that as well, and it’s still in a thousand pieces.

Never had a muscle car back in the day, but they were plentiful. I grad. HS in '82 and in my era, Chevelles, Novas, Camaro's were all the rage. Lots of real ss big block stuff too. Those things were a dime a dozen.

I was talking to a friend the other day that owns a '69 Shelby gt500, conv. He paid $6k for it in 1980.

Not a muscle car but I traded my '82 firebird (loaded base model, mint cond, low miles) even up for a 1957 MB 190SL, around 1990. Sold the Benz after 3 years for $9,000.oo!

Bought a 69 GTO in 71 for $1450. Expresso brown, parchment int., white vinyl top, 4 spd, hideaways. Car had 6031 miles on the clock and bought it from an old couple (60's) and was bought for them by the son. The car was mint, and just sat as they put regular gas in it and it pinged like crazy and they wouldn't drive it !

Bought my first Pontiac in 1964. It was a 62 GP 4-speed. Paid $2955.30. It had about 25K miles and was owned by a local dealer's son.

In 1974 I bought a '68 GTO convertible for $400 including tax and title. The used car lot wanted to get rid of it because of higher gas prices. It was a totally loaded cruiser with power steering, seats, windows, Hideaways, door locks, Dual Gate, air, brakes.
It was Verdoro Green with black top, interior and deluxe wheel covers. It needed front end work, a muffler, a top, a trans reseal and some tune up items. Tires worn but not bald. 54,000 miles. My old man had a fit. He only liked slow economical cars and when he saw it he was infuriated, made me get rid of it immediately. I still have the VIN and I ran it on DMV in all 50 states and its gone. I would give anything to have it back and show him.

I bought a 1967 Firebird vert for $300 in April 1977. 326 two speed manual everything. Deluxe interior with ac, which was gone. Almost had to tow it home. There was a big hole cut in the right quarter where the owner had to get a cat out that crawled in there. I was a junior in high school. My dad later told me he figured I'd get tired of fixing it up and get rid of it 6 months later. Well here it is almost 42 years later and I still have the car. It's approaching the final stages of a project I started too many years ago. I can't wait to get it back on the road. I really miss this car.

The golden age to buy muscle cars was in the 1973-1978 time frame. The oil embargo made those cars undesirable and cheap.

You could buy any type of muscle car for $1500 to $4500.

Example: Neighbor had an all original 1968 Shelby GT500 with a 428/dual quads and an auto trans.Under 50k miles and in nice condition for $4800 in 1977.

Or another guy in town had a 1970 Hemi Cuda - complete but disassembled for $4500.

I could type for hours on the prices, but it does no good. The way back machine is broken......

Remember May 4th 1970? Kent State riots and "4 dead in Ohio). I was in downtown Cleveland attending Case Western Reserve University when they closed the campus for the remainder of the year. Went up to see my Physics scores (I got a "B"....) and noted a 3 by 5 index card with a printed ad that read:

"1964 Pontiac V8 stickshift $400 see Dr. Case."

He was my Physics Professor. Gave me the keys and I noted the GTO fob then went to the faculty parking lot where I spotted her. 389 tripower four speed posi in a 2 door coupe for $400.

Drove it all summer long, painted her Hugger Orange then sold her for $600 and went back for my sophomore year and paid cash for the credit hours...

I paid $600.00 for my 68 Firebird in 1979 from a used car dealership called "Fairly Reliable Bobs". My dad thought I was making a big mistake...he thought I should have bought a Plymouth Satellite sitting on the same lot. It was a super clean car with a white interior. I've since painted it and redone the interior and has had a number of motors and transmissions in it. It was my first car and I still own it today.

In late '74 I bought a really loaded '68 GTO convertible for $400 tax and title included. PS, PB, PW, Pwr seat, tilt, a/c, posi, buckets, console, Dual Gate, Hideaways. Verdoro green with black top and interior. It needed a top, front end work, had a leaky trans and was missing a muffler and a deluxe wheel cover. Worn tires. 57,000 miles. A little front fender rust but hey, it was Pittsburgh. My old man was incensed as his idea of a good car was a Karman Ghia. I had to take it back. My first car.

1972 paid $600 for 65 Mustang 2+2, 289, 4bbl, 4 speed

1974 only $200 for 64 1/2 Mustang coupe, 289 K motor, 4 speed. Guy thought engine was blown. Turned out to be busted heater hose and leaking rear gasket on intake manifold. He saw water and oil on the ground.

1975 paid $2000 for 69 Z/28 with original 302 DZ engine, factory ZL2 hood, D80 spoilers, 76 Daytona yellow w/blk vinyl top

All gone a long time ago. Wish I still had the Z/28. Currently happy with my 68 Firebird I recently purchased.

Default 65 GTO.

My very first car was a used 65 GTO. I paid $1200.00 to a private owner in 1968.

4sp tri power. Only car I owned twice, I only sold it the first time because I was drafted.

I’ve had four since, obviously my favorite year. Have one now.

I got my 1969 Camaro L78 SS396 for $35
My fathers friend (a doctor) bought it new and after the ‘73 oil embargo simply left it in the garage. By 1988 he had a couple of Big Mercedes and just wanted space in the garage. He just told my dad if I wanted it just pay the towing bill to get it out of the garage I could have it.

About 6 years ago my friend in Texas wanted his 79 TA out of his moms garage as she was moving. The car been sitting there since he moved there in 1990. $500.
It’s still running the same factory stock 1971 455 we installed in 1989-90.

Bought my first in 1984. I was 15. It was a 1967 LeMans. Two door. A/C car with buckets and a console. 2 speed automatic. About 4 different colors of paint and primer. The rear springs were so wore out it sat lower than the front end. But it ran and drove quite well considering.

In those days there was no internet. The best you could do was the local newspaper. I found her listed for $500. A few hours later it was sitting in my drive. I miss that car. You can't buy the VIN tag and title for $500.
