37 Buick odd valve spring
A fellow Pontiac owner is rebuilding his 37 Buick head and sent this picture of this odd spring on all the intake valves (but not exhaust). Does anybody have an idea why the spring is used with the stem seal?

Is it holding some type of valve seal? Probably not on the exhaust cause it would melt.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I never had the head off my '37 Buick's engine.
That appears to be an attempt (by Buick or aftermarket?) to apply stem seals to the undersides of the guides, rather than today's topside seals. If it works, it has an advantage over the modern style- which can starve the stem/guide of needed oil (as the earliest Perfect Circle seals did).
