Need advice: Asking Price for 1980 Trans Am
I'm looking at possibly selling my 1980 Trans Am. I'm looking for what I should ask for a starting price. It has:
4 Wheel Disks Posi Rear end 1971 Pontiac 400 engine Edelbrock 1406 650 CFM carb and intake Roller rockers T-Tops 200 R4 Overdrive Transmission with lock up I think it was the WS6 package. 67,000 miles Interior is OK. Dash is cracked and back seats have some old cigarette burns in them. Beige interior needs freshened up, but is passable. Paint looks good from 10-20' away, but isn't great. Needs minor body work, a few little dents but no rust. Some old bondo coming out of drivers door. Mechanically, everything else is good. I's like to sell it before I redo the interior and paint it. If you have suggestions on a price, please let me know. |

From a purist, the 80 model is not as desirable because of engine choices. You have swapped that so (a.) a weaker motor is not an issue (b.) car is no longer original which detracts some value to a lot of people.
I think the days of owning one of these cars as a hot rod to cruise around and drive to high school stopped around 1990, so most people in the market will want a nice restored/restomoded car. That being said, unless the interior is perfect it will most likely get replaced. Same for the paint. I think a good selling price for your car as is would be in the $9k +- range. Restored that car would sell for upwards of $20k, it will cost $10-$15k to get it there. |

I looked for Trans Am nation. All I found was a Facebook page. Is that the one?

I think your picking a terrible time to sell. You might want to wait until all this virus stuff has passed.

I will most likely wait until everyone is coming out of quarantine, spending income tax, stimulus checks, and disposable income they've not been able to spend (other than Amazon) since stuck at home. I'm just using this time to prepare. Too bad though, with gas so low, it would be a good time to open up that 400.

Sounds like a great cruiser and desirable. what is rear ratio? Most were 2.73 or 2.41. This would make a great road trip car.

4 wheel disc brakes is a part of the WS6 Package. If it was stock I wouldn't want it. As Keery say '80 engine choices weren't all that good, but the engine and trans in it now changes that. Good to see no T-tops.
Body looks to be black. What's the interior like.... vinyl or cloth seats? The Hobnail cloth would be my preference. I had a 79 Formula, black on black, 301, 4bbl automatic, posi rear. To me the 79s were the last of the good TAs and Formulas. BTW.. I liked the 301 in mine. It did eat 302 T-birds for lunch. LOL

It has the 2.73 rear end. Cruises at 70 mph at about 1400 rpm, still does good burn outs thanks to the 200r4's low 1st gear. It is a T-top. The interior is cloth. The back seats are original beige, the fronts look to be a replacement in black.

Decided to ask $9,000 and see what happens. If I don't get a serious offer, I will look at painting it and sprucing up the interior.
I put it on Facebook Marketplace. Anywhere else I should list it, other than Craigslist? |
