The comment I was responding to was that the '69 was 'cooler' because it's more popular. We've pretty well established that the '69 is more popular...Like a Camaro is more popular than either one...the question is, does popularity equal 'cooler'? If so, the Camaro is cooler than any GTO.

I've learned many years ago that any car show that had "people's choice" awards was a given to Mustangs and Camaros. That's just the way it is. And a Camaro Pace car would be tops all the time.

Certainly love the 68. However, in my world with dad being in the used car business at that time, most of the GTOs bought and sold were equipped with a/c, automatic, power steering and brakes. Cars that were certainly sporty but were not sales limited if they had been manual tranny and no a/c here in Texas.

I was only 12 at the time but very into cars. The 69s had dual snorkel air cleaners vs single snorkel of the 68. Also, the 69s always seemed more eager or peppy as we called it. All of the 68s and 69s were YS code 350 horse engines with the turbo 400 tranny that dad had come through his business. As I recall, the 68s came with a 2:93 rear when ordered with YS engine, Turbo 400 and a/c. The 69s came with a 3:23 rear gear.

The quicker the better in my mind, so I have favored the 69s ever since.

Correct me if I am wrong on the rear gear, but that is what I recall checking the codes back then against the factory services manuals at the time.

My stock automatic 68 non a/c convertible ran a best of 13.93. Having 3:36 ratio and walking out as best I can. My newly acquired 69 feels strong and stock rubber will be useless at the strip. Maybe another 13.90 car? It's all fun.

Do not have any '68 info here. The AMA sheets that I do have for '69 GTO (vin #242) are as follows.
-----------------
> 350 horse 400 "standard" engine = 3.55 for manual, 3.36 for auto, and 3.23 for a/c equipped cars

> 265 horse "regular fuel" 400 with 2-bbl = 2.93, 2.56, 3.23, and 2.78 for a/c equipped

> 366 horse 400 RA3 = 3.55 for both manual and auto, with 3.23 for a/c equipped

> 370 horse 400 RA4 = 3.90 for both manual and auto, no a/c available

No Sh*t? .... F'in 69s had a 3.23? ... no wonder they were fast.

Had a friend with a 69 Lemans, 350/4bbl auto with a 3.23 Posi, that I could just barely beat with my 68 GTO auto, 2.93 open diff. Course after about 100mph the GTO would run away.

I do not have either, but if I had the $$$ I would buy a hidden headlight 69 GTO. No hood tachometer, it drive me crazy not being symmetrical!

Good point about the 68 and earlier Auto + AC cars having 2.93's versus 3.23 in 69 and up. I've had two 68's with auto and air and they had that 2.93, nice cruising gear but it definitely took away that snappy off the line musclecar feel!

I get the symmetry thing! That's why I always preferred the look of two non-remote mirrors rather than the look of just one remote or non-remote or worse a remote on the drivers side and a non-remote on the passenger side. A passenger mirror was not offered from the factory but many dealers would slap on a non-remote (it could fit either side unlike the remote which only fit on the drivers side).

I've always thought the hood tach took distracted from an otherwise perfect hood.

Me too and driving the car with it drives me crazy. I like the plain and simple scoops no tach.

I love em both, but I prefer the 68 just slightly. I had a Solar red 68 with a 4 speed, that thing was a blast. I don't own any GTO's at this moment, but I do own a 68 Lemans HO with a 3 speed manual trans, posi, buckets.

Looovvveee the hood tach. Its way better than the dash tach or a sun tach "clamped" to the steering column, or a tach on the console. Too bad there was condensation issues back in the day. Not a problem for me these days as it will never be out in the rain.

Going to put one on my '68 firebird convertible.

I am surprised the poll is as close as it is. I figured 69 would be way ahead.

I thinking it's about right and can't pick a favorite. I've owned both years and each provides lot's of fun.

I'm also a bit surprised the voting is so close too, barely favoring the '69 at this point at 42 to 39.

I think the '68s were underappreciated for a long time, and that's been turning around recently.

I started a copycat poll regarding the '64 and '65 GTOs. will be interesting to see how that one turns out. The '64s were also underappreciated and have seen a surge in popularity.
