1964 Grand Prix Tail Panel Repair
Has anyone repaired the section of tail panel above the tail lights? This tail panel rotted from the trunk seal to the tail light opening. This is like 5 bends in less than 2 inches. I'm just wondering what you guys did. Cat and bonne tail panels dont have the cut outs for the tail lights and i'm noticing this 1 year only is about as rare as frog fur.
Thanks Adam

Sometimes you gotta stand back, grab two pieces of angle iron and a BFH and sort it out. 2 hours, some swearing, and.....you’re done. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks. It’s all hidden but, after 5 years of working on it, no point in half assing it. The number of bends kinda concerned me, to the point I was looking for a brake. Measure twice, bend once. Lol

Adam, have you tried Frank's Pontiac Parts in CA or Steve Barrack at Pontiac Heaven in AZ (a member here)? Unless you've spent some time using a sheet metal brake and are comfortable bending compound curves I'd be attempting to find a usable one. One more place to try is Steve Snyder at Colorado Pontiacs (on Facebook).

Two 3" x 3/8" angle iron holds it good and tight. to bend over 90 i grabbed a piece of flat bar to sit up above the angle irons. i'm glad it worked out and i saved roughly $400CDN minimum. Small wins. lol

Hahaha. Now there is something I’ve never tried! I saw Dan Short do it in Fantom Works once. My temporary home office happens to be right in front of my tv lol. I managed to keep the factory braze weld in the corner. This is one of those builds that if I’d have known what I was getting my self into I’d have bought a car that wasn’t a one year model or at least panels were repopped for it. You can’t beat the experience though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My 64 GP is from California.....and haven’t had to fix any rust. I put a new Windsheild in it last year....and to my surprise, there was not one speck of rust in the channel.....and all the clips were mint too.

I had a good windshield channel. But the rear window was cancerous. I fixed the channel but the clips I ordered were wrong and I didn’t notice until I went to put the trim on and it stuck out an 1/8”. I got some new clips that are correct. I will put the window in when the trunk is complete. Still a ways to go. I have the same problem on the right side as above so another few days on that. I have to repair the structure down the sides of the trunk opening as well. It appears a fair amount of water invaded this trunk over the years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The inverse slant didn’t help. Water stands in the corners like a champ. As does the lip under the trunk seal. I think that’s how I got so much cancer in the tail. And 20 years in Ontario winters didn’t help

FYI......when you install the new trunk weather strip....make sure you put down one continuous bead of 3M weather strip adhesive.....may use the whole tube. And a generous bead too.
