Stock up on cluster gear sets.

Yep. Many years ago I cleanly banged second gear in my '64. Next stop light, shifted normally into second gear, clunk clunk clunk... Snapped one tooth clean off of the cluster in my "Rock Crusher". I was making maybe 450HP max.

What does the car weigh? What rear tires? Power shifting? Adjustable clutch?
Won’t be long for this life if stock, just not made for the type of abuse you can dish. Hardened input shaft, better gears, bushed case, etc would help a little. An adjustable clutch will help it live at the launch but the 2nd to 3rd shift will be killer. Never had luck making them live, went to Autogear and that was better. Have a GForce now and that is a beast. Good luck |

There is nothing you can do to make an M20 live with 550 HP.

There is a reason why most of the stockers use Jericos and other trannies-any why in the 70s the GM SS and early ProStockers used Hemi and Ford Toploaders.

Routinely quick-shifted the 4-spd Saginaw with the OHC-6 at high RPM (6000-7500).
400 might survive with ST-10 from late 70s, M21-HD too 455 would be a crying matter. |

I think the horsepower to weight ratio might be the deciding factor. Back in the late 70s my brother when street racing would flat shift ( Throttle to the floor no clutch just slam the factory shifter at 6500 red line!) his 69 Firebird 350 HO car M20 stock Hurst shifter with 433 gears and G-60 tires all the time with not one breakage! The trans still lives to this day in this very car! The sound of that 350 singing at 6500 and only dropping about 500 RPM during a shift made me the 3 pedal junkie I am today!

RPM is one thing...Torque is quite another...

Do yourself a favor, save your Penny's and buy a Jericho. My 67 made 600RWHP, 700+ torque with a 150 shot. 3520 w/o driver. I did muncie, super case muncie and wound up going to a Jerico after foolishly wasting money trying to make the other stuff work. Twin disc Mcloed clutch, denny's nitrous ready drive shaft, 1350 yokes, 4.33 rear. Launched 5000-6000 rpm on a 2 step 28" slicks full exhaust/interior. Would run 10.20s to 10.50s. Keep a little slip off the line and I still hurt the tranny. Lots of fun though
