Those cars were apparently built by a company called National Coach Engineering. There's some information on them here: http://www.firebirdgallery.com/national_coachlot1.htm

I don't know about the new gen Camaro but GM has not made a real convertible for a long time. Firebirds, Sunbirds and Sunfires sold by Pontiac Dealers all started life as hardtops that had their roofs cut off. Except for the Firebird, the door posts and inner door were sawzalled off and the window assembly repositioned. Fox body Mustangs were hacked as well.
Anyone who has replaced a power window motor on the Sunbird/Sunfire could tell you what a Frankenstein job was done. I believe all were done by ASC but not 100% on that. I know they definitely did do them though. Last edited by Chief of the 60's; 08-13-2019 at 02:24 PM. |

Per the link I posted earlier, the conversions on Firebirds of that era were done by National Coach Engineering. I believe ASC did the convertible conversions on third generation Firebirds.

Ditch the top, put a roll bar in, sunny days only.

Sooooooooo ugly.
These cars don't have the quarter panels to be a convertible. The shape is all wrong, and it doesn't matter if the top is up or down, it looks awful.

For some reason that one looks better than some I have seen with the top up. Still doesn't do it for me though. These cars should not be 'verts. I dont even think the 3rd gens look right. Its a shame, its such a low mileage car. If the price were cheaper would be a good candidate for a roof swap!

It's ugly and probably a super rattle trap. But not the worst looking convertible I have ever seen. That honor belongs to the PT Cruiser Convertible, a coffin on wheels. It's really rare to have to say, "that's a really nice car in good condition. To bad it's a convertible. "

My car has frame connectors welded in and was built in Toronto. Looks like National parts used.

Your color scheme with dark top looks vastly better than first car posted. Thanks for pics.

I'm sorry but converted Pontiacs don't fair well as a converted Challenger even though this Fiero is a factory prototype.

The 4th gen Firebird & Camaro convertibles were done by GM as well.

Yeah I'll never understand why Chrysler doesn't offer it. It looks so much like an old one.
