Dealers have been asking for those prices for quite some time. I've seen the same cars available from the same dealers with those prices, i.e. they have not sold.

Do your homework before you go. Write down the facts and take them with you. Make sure it has WS4 at the bottom of the cowl tag. Should still have a 12 bolt rear end. Engine partial VIN should match last digits on dash VIN.

1970 400 RAIII automatic engine code YZ, Distributor #1112009.
1970 400 RAIII manual engine code WS, Distributor #1112010
1970 400 RAIV automatic engine codes XN & XP Distributor #1112011 (same distributor number for manual & automatic)
1970 400 RAIV manual engine codes WH & WW Distributor #1112011

good luck, show pics.

I think the Van Nuys cars don't show the model RPO;
228870L = Van Nuys
228870N = Norwood

If this car has a numbers drivtrain, well then it would seem to me that you just bettered the odds of winning 6/49!
If it's a TA, take it for what it is, and assess everything later.

I can be emailed for any info, and I am quite happy to help.

No matter a 6k start for a complete 70 TA isn't going to be an upside down purchase IMHO.

Not an expert on prices. Some on PY have been in the market on 70 TA values.

But, this guy is and you may want to PM him to discuss what he thinks...

If you want a accurate value on the car you should post a picture. IMO a automatic with a non matching motor is not something I would want to do a resto on.

Beggers can't be choosers. Take what you can get. These cars aren't falling out of the sky anymore.

Agreed depending upon the state of the sheet metal, etc.

But in his opening comment, the OP stated:

What is this were true and it is the original drivetrain?

We also don't know what the OP means when he says "it is all there and will need to be restored". Does that mean locating a shaker for it? Just new carpet and interior? New quarters, etc. Too many unknowns. All else being equal yes, a polar white auto with non-original motor will be worth less than a lucerne blue 4-speed with its born with drivetrain. Too many unknowns here for an accurate assessment and even with pictures still tough to do.

Ultimately, I think we are discussing 2 questions:
1) whether a project should be bought at $6k or $3k?
2) whether or not a project should be restored at all?

It feels like the OP is asking question 1 when question 2 is the question that matters. I should know, I often get hung up on question 1 and often forget all about question 2.

There is also a whole host of research suggesting that auctions are the best price discovery mechanism out there.

Of course it was auction week here in AZ with several going on, and I watched most of them and visited 2 of them.

Looked at all the 70-73 TA's and even posted about it somewhere on the forum here. Didn't seem to matter which auction house it was, they all sold for similar numbers. Nothing outrageous but nothing really cheap either. About what I would have expected actually whether it be a private seller or an auction house. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary this year.

There are variables there too. Quality of the restoration, time and day of auction, was the auction televised, how inebriated were the bidders, all these play a factor and should only be used as a "guide" not as an etched in stone number. Also, when many (most) people look at auction numbers they always gravitate to the highest number they can find and run with it. That's not how it works.

I looked at 3 of them at B-J in person. Went for about what I expected. I'm still waiting for that "deal". I didn't get to see the Lucerne Blue auto with a "fresh" restoration. It went for a bit more than the others...

Been a while since I've looked but I believe the trim tag does show the option...
Van Nuys has ST 70 22887 for TA.
Norwood has ST 70 22387 and stamped lower; W66, W67 or WS4 for upgrade.

It's your money. Old saying is..."Let the buyer beware". If he knows what he has then he understands why you need to check it out.. If not, he must have learned his skills as a previous time share salesmen (today's price only).

If this is a real ‘70 T/A, I think 6k is a deal. Good luck!
