No Turn Signals But Have Flashers
1968 GTO 400 4 Spd
Tail Lights come on and work fine. Stop Lamps come on when brake is depressed. Hazard Flashers work at all four corners. Correct elements light up inside the two element bulbs. Problem: Left and right turn signals only light up tail lamp element (not the stop, hazard and signal element) and blink rapidly rather than at the correct speed. The "GEN" light in the dash lights up and flashes at the same speed as the signal lights. Do I need a new flasher unit? Do I need a new turn signal switch in the steering column? Or, is it something else? I am stumped at this point and I am hoping that someone may have a good way to check this out and resolve the problem. Last edited by Red Box Rebel; 09-23-2019 at 09:37 PM. Is front and rear working? (One burned out/not working can cause fast blinking.)

I'd check the flasher unit. Make sure it is the correct type.
Also might check the dash grounds?

Sounds very much like a ground problem.
Run a temporary ground wire direct from the battery to a GOOD ground point on the dash plus a few more wires to the column and the body shell. Not hard to do and won't take long. If your problem has gone away, you can start eliminating the potential fault points.

Thank you for the replies
1. All bulbs front and rear are good. 2. Dash grounds are all good (Recently checked) 3. Flasher Unit was replaced more than 15 or 20 years ago. Not completely sure if it is the correct one for the Year and model. Will an incorrect or malfunctioning flasher unit cause this problem? Remember, the hazard flasher works at all four corners with the parking/tail lamps on or off. All bulbs and all grounds are good. |

The hazard flasher needs to be used on the hazards and the turn signal flasher on the turn signals.
It can cause some problems. But the grounds can also cause it. Maybe run some extra temporary grounds to see what it does? Also replace the flasher with a new hazard flasher.

There's one flasher in the fuse block on a 68 and another tucked up near the steering column on the left side of it, held in place by 2 spring loaded prongs.

Where to get one?
Quote:
(1) How to check both '68 Flashers for malfunctions; and (2) Where to get a new column mounted flasher? |
