Default Door latch slop

I took the weather stripping off the doors when I painted the shell with epoxy. I put new hinges on the doors. Even before I removed the weather stripping, the doors seemed to rattle around a lot on the strikers so I bought new strikers hoping that they would latch better.

It seems like the door latches themselves have some play in them. When they are latched, the door can still move about a 1/4" in and out. I looked at the latch and it seems like they were designed with some play in them. I can't figure out why that would be. Is the weather stripping supposed to provide the "stop" for the door?

I would have thought that the latch (when closed) would not move "in" ,like it does, and would perfectly capture the striker holding the door shut. Are my latches worn out somehow or do I just not know how to adjust them?

I've never though of this before but would make sense that the latch has some play to account for body assembly variations. The weathstrip would keep a door snug without slop.

You are adjusting your striker to pull the door in tight, aren't you?

All I am trying to do at this point is line the door up with the quarter panel so I can block sand across the seam.

I adjusted the striker by reaching through the inside of the door, loosing the bolt (in the latched position), lining the door up with the quarter panel and then tightening the striker bolt.

I was surprised because the door doesn't stay in that position. It sill has about 1/4 inch of in/out movement.

I think I am just going to replace the latch and see if that fixes it.

I am surprised you can't move your striker bolt in some (it takes a big torx Bit).

TJ, I think you might be misunderstanding what Fairway is saying. The striker is tight, but the latch in the door has play in it when latched.

Fairway, I do believe it's correct that the weatherstripping will snug things up.
