How can I identify one? I notice on alot of sites axle codes are listed as N/A. I have what I believe to be a '69 GP rear axle in my GTO. I can't find an axle code anywhere and it is almost entirely bare metal now. All I found was N116 on the driveres side tube facing down. I'm having problems getting an axle that fits this rear end and need to know if HD axles were different. Spline count is 28 on mine and it has 3.42 cone-type posi. I realize 3.42 weren't available so I need to pull the cover off again and read the date code. They are GM gears.

I have read a few different posts on your search for an axle. At this point it might be best to ship the axle off to a vendor like Moser and have them identify the one good axle you have. Then have them make you a nice new pair of axles, or just the missing one if your budget is tight.

Who knows, they might even have a good used axle for you sitting in their stash of used axles.

I know it's getting rediculous. I'm on a tight budget at the moment, so Buying a new pair is out of the question. I was trying to get it back on the road, but it's looking like it will get moved back to the back of the shop till I can afford to do something drastic. I'm fustrated that I can't find the reason why this axle that is 95% identical won't fit.

I am trying to look thru my info, the first year for 3.42 was 71.I only thought cone type posi came on earlier axle's 65 era. The codes I've found are on the front of the right axle tube(passenger side). Does the axle have the bearing attached? or is the bearing inside the tube? Probably the first but 3.42? Unless that was another GM division gear. I have 'heard' there are HD axles.

Well I took out the carrier the other day and my suspicions were confirmed. The 28 spline axle I have does NOT fit the cone clutch's splines. I don't know why, but the other 28 spline axles I have will drop right in, this one won't. Unfortunately I don't have another 28 spline with outer seal that drops in. I'm gonna have a hell of a time finding another axle since I can't really explain what is different about them, but at least I know the exact problem now.
