Mike,
I believe the GTO guy you talked to should know if his dad bought a new stick shift car in 71 or not, my book lists a 1971 455(L-75) "WJ" code 325HP stick engine for GPs & GTOs with a block casting # of 485428. I'm not wanting to start anything on here just give the info I have on the subject. Just because I've never seen one dosen't mean it does not exist, just my two cents! <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by poncho-mike: Hi guys, I wasn't aware this thread was still going on. The 69 GP with the 3-spd is a model J. I believe that the power discs were standard on SJ, but optional on the Model Js. I don't think any manual tranny SSJs were built. I got into this argument with a 71 GTO owner who swore his dad bought a 71 GTO 455 D-port 4-spd new. If you look in the factory service manuals and all several of the reference books, you'll find that there is no engine code listed for the 455 D-port engine with manual tranny. I believe that you could get a 400 with a 3-spd in GP and Monte Carlo. Talking about odd options on the GPs. Have any of you ever seen a set of rear shoulder harnesses for a 69 GP? Well, it just goes to show that if you open your mouth often enough your foot will find its way into it.
Sales literature shows L-75 available w/mt on GP J and GP SJ. 3 speed standard with 4 speed available. Assembly manual shows a WA engine code for the MT/455/325 engine. Assembly manual shows it available also in GTO but not with RA option. Date on page is Feb, '70. My literature was missing the GTO engine available pages so can't go there. On the LeMans, LeMans Sport and T'37 it only shows AT for 455/325 (L-75) engine. BTW, where did you find the WJ engine code? Tried to look at Wallace Racing tonight but couldn't log on. Assembly manual does not show LS5 available on 233, 235 and 237 series also but we know that happened. Compression ratios are all still high in assembly manual and there were about 8-10 V-8's available. Even a 400 Super Duty. The HO shows up as a Holley Carb. Well we all know that did not happen. Thx GM.

Just went to wallace racing web site and found WJ as a 455/325 code. Don't know if any were actually installed in A bodies or not. But, since this is a G body forum, guess will have to ask elsewhere. I'll do that.

That`s pretty! Looks like Verdoro green? My `69 is also Verdoro green, but with a black top. I do love all GPs 69 to 77, but I am biased towards the sexy starter of that body line...LOVE those 69s!

Hey how about the 70 GP?..looks the same as the 69. The 70 is the Rodney Dangerfield of 69-72 GP...no respect!

Hi. I have rarely, if ever, posted here.
I somehow managed to remember my username and password. Rare options? I know of 2-69' GPs that have the rear shoulder belts. One is the late Fred Engers' car - it is a brown, no vinyl top SJ with green leather interior and custom belts. Auto w/regular 428. This car has been used to create the first 1/18 scale model of a 69 GP in steel. Another car is the same, but has a vinyl top added and has gold leather interior. It still sits in a garage in Saskatchewan - 1300 miles from me! (I'm in Chicago). Some options I have never seen are the Powerflo ventilation system, which was for non-A/C cars only and has little blower motors in the foot vents, and the other is the Instant-Aire pump, which was a vacuum operated tire pump. We had a model J 3spd car with the 428 HO. It had power brakes with front discs, even though no brake option was on the invoice. Yes - 1 of 3. Car was sold in 84' and scrapped in 85'. The sad thing is that it was still pretty saveable. Regarding Hurst GPs, I spoke with Jim Wangers (one of the original founders of the GTO) and he ordered an HO 4spd car in 69', white with no vinyl top. He had the gold paint and gold painted Rally II wheels put on; the car was bought by Hurst and was the prototype for the 70 Hurst/SSJ. Neither he nor I know the whereabouts of this car. He now has a replica, but it is just a 400/auto car. Since my HO 4spd J is white, I may make a Hurst out of mine. I do at least have his blessing! It is possible that a 70 or 71 Hurst SSJ could have been ordered with a stick, but it is doubtful if anyone went ahead and did it. |

T-Scout,
That's a beautiful GP in that picture above! I've always maintained that someone with some ordering prowess could of ordered an SSJ with a 3 or 4-speed. Maybe a Pontiac or Hurst employee, or maybe someone in a zone office, etc. I would think Hurst would of been more than happy to feature a car like that. I've been researching the SSJs since 1985 and haven't discovered anything on a stick SSJ. If anyone knows or knew or one, post it here!
