Default oil issue

im looking for some answers on this oil issue with the head/cam. i keep reading about using an external oil system for the lash adjusters and cam. When is this needed, can you just use the factory set up with the correct size orifice? if you need to use the external oil setup what is the proper way to do this? any pics?

If the oil pressure to the bottom end has been modified (ie wrong relief spring put in or shimed) then the stock orfice size is wrong. My understanding is the main pressure should be around 30psi to let the orfice tube down the pressure to around 12psi. If a 40psi spring is put in, then the orfice tube will allow too much pressure into the lash adjuster galley. I'm guessing similarly if too heavy an oil is used too.

The idea behind an external line is to block off the orfice tube (to the lash adjuster galley, not to the cam housing!!) and run an external pressure regulator. It doesn't require much volume so tee'ing off the oil pressure sending port is sufficient. I've only read about it and seen one set up, but it's the way I'm going with my build.

A needle valve and a pressure regulator is the way to go.
Its also a good idea to put a gauge inline so you can monitor and adjust the pressure.
I shoot for 10 psi but have had no ill effects at around 8 when experimenting.
I have tested stock systems and recorded as high as 15 psi.

I agree with what has been said, I have Tom Langdons old race engine from the Hole-Shot 6 Fiat, and it has that Mod done to it. I can try and get to it and take some pic's if anyone is interested. External pic's that is. The engine is still together.

Crane Cams made a copy and included it in the early versions of their regrinds.
Ill see if I can scan and publish it but it will be at least next week.
BTW anyone have an old Crane that used lash caps and lash adjuster spacers?
Jeff,Toms car was an Anglia from what I remember

Cammerjeff,

I would also be interested in seeing pics of the engine.

Thanks,

Jeff,

I stand corrected it was a Ford, not a Fiat. Just shows how an old memory can get confused with a small Euro car that starts with an F, and look simalure.

Well I managed to climb over the mounds of parts to get at Tom L's old engine, here are the shots of the external upper end oiling system with regulator. I could not get a pic of regulators knob. It is mounted on the bottom.

See how many one off parts can be seen in these few pic's of the passenger side of that engine. The drivers side would have shown its one of a kind home made Tri power using 3 progressive Holley 2 bbls from a Pinto, with water heat, and a log manifold with 1 large oval aircleaner covering all 3 carbs. As run on the Hole Shot 6 the Log Manifold ran into 6 indvidual curved intake runners that were so long, the carbs and the log portion of the intake sat on the passenger side of the engine!!!!!! And the exhaust was two 3 into 1 tube headers that ran into 2 separate trumpet style exhaust pipes.

I recieved it after the runners had been shortened for use on his old Stovebolt Bread Truck, he had to 1/2 the leanth of the runners to gain some torque for the street, and he fabed up a 6 into 1 header that connected to a 4 foot trumpet style exhaust with no muffler. I can still hear the sound of that truck when he opened it up!!!!! It was actually not loud until over 1/2 throttle.

I still remember making a few hot rod runs behind him with one of the local Detriot Street Rod Clubs, Me in my 67 Sprint Lemans and him in the Bread Truck. We were not the slowest cars in the group, and we were the only ones that could bypass most of the Gas Stops!!!!! That was at least 25 years ago.

carb type fuel pressure regulator

Jeff ,thanks for going thru the trouble of taking the pics.
Ill have to explore the galley port Tom used ,as I use the one
in back, and his spot is easier to get to.

the boss where the oil line is connected to the head goes into the head bolt hole, I see that it can be drilled through to the lash adjuster galley but would there be enuf oil flow around the head bolt or is there some clearancing done in the had bolt cavity aor modifications to the head bolt. There is also the same boss on the front of the engine could this also be used???

Hmm, definitely an interesting location! The volume can be real low (look at the size of the orfice hole for example), so as long as it has room. I'll be looking at my heads when I get home tonight!

The problem with the front boss is a fitting would interfere with the timing belt.

Agree that the flow is minimal
just need to pressurize the galley
and hold it while engine is running.

I do not think it is a HP requirement, as much as it is an oil pressure requirement. If you increase the oil pressure of your engine, the stock restricter becomes inaffective.

Meaning that it will allow to much oil to the upper end of the engine. This external bypass system reduces the oil back to stock.

That is if I understand the reasoning behind it correctly. And you would need to put a pressure gauge on the downstream side of the regulator, at least during the set up period.

What pressure are we shooting for in the lash adjuster gallery

Jeff,
Those are some real cool pieces. Thanks for sharing.
When was the last time the engine was ran/used is she rebuildable as is?
Do you all the parts from/for it?
I would love to see the complete engine mocked up for a full shot

Jeff,

The engine was last run in the late 80's. I have all the parts but 1 small peice of the 6 into 1 header. The #1 tube used a slip joint that fit into the remainder of the header that is about 8" long, I am missing that small part along with its mounting flange.
I do have the Single long 4' trumpet that was used on the Bread Truck. If I can move some things around, I will see if I can dig the engine out. Untill about 2 years ago I was turning the engine over every month, but when I had to move my stash of parts into its present location, it is more that alittle cluttered. And I have note been able to do that.

Did you grab the 3 shots of the Hole shot 6 off of Toms Website?

Between 10 and 15 psi, I'm going to shoot for 12psi.

The stock main oil pressure was 30psi, I plan on bumping that to a full 60psi with 10w-30 oil if I can, while maintaining the lash adjuster galley at 12 psi constant.
