Ahh yes..remember reading about the southern sheriffs and his Trans ams..here in my state the Highway patrol has used various hi-po 80's and 90's vehilces for our wide open spaces..first were the ill handling mustang 50's..after losing a few to flip-overs they were retired..then came the police special camaro rs's..these lasted a couple of years and the latest are '99 and up Z-28'S (wonder why they didnt get ram air ta's?) ..the best police force for years was the Honolulu pd..their favorite vehicles during the late 80's were Buick grand nationals..I remember seeing all sorts of hi-po cars in front of the Waikiki precinct..throw a blue bubble on your Tran am and you're stylin'...next pic is finally the Big blue's Ram air IV

Heres a new pic of a nic stretch of highway mad famous by the late Bill Harrah..besides having the largest collection of automobiles..Mr. Harrah loved to take out his Ferraris for a little "exercise"..in a early/mid 70's issue of Road and Track; there's a famous pic of one of Harrahs Daytona Ferraris showing the speedo pegged at 175! this pic was taken along this highway..I live about ten miles from this stretch..this one is very smooth and goes 5 miles dead straight (includes a one mile slow down stretch)..this was one of Big blues haunts;but encroaching development has made the traffic too much for high speeds..when I drive very fast I try to pick relatively deserted stretches..just not close to the house anymore

Is that Highway Route 318? Looks like it. We run the Silver State Classic in the EFI GTO.

Great stretch of highway. Too bad we have nothing like that in California so we could run a Silver State Classic / Pony Express style of race here.

The head official says the same thing at the mandatory driver/navigator meeting the night before the race. "There are all sorts of animals out there. From squirrels to foxes to deer and everything in between. If you're going downcourse at speed and see a deer in the road, do what you feel you have to. But my advice is - if the animal is the size of a rabbit or smaller, well, looks like the animal is having a bad day."

No..actually this is highway 447..Pyramid highway..there are a bunch of nice roads like this in Nevada..how did the EFI GTO do in the silver state? I used to own a 1989 turbo trans am that was raced a couple of times in the silver state..I hope to have a pic this weekend of a nice four lane stretch that is my favorite exercise place for big blue..it has a nice just under ten mile straight-a-way..bonus its close to my house..there are a couple of other great highways with even longer straights;just kinda out of the way...In one of my previous posts I talked about Bill Harrah..he used to have various super modified vehicles to mess around with people..one was a station wagon witha Nascar style engine..he used to wait along the stretch between Reno and Carson city for kids in their muscle cars to go by..he come alongside..kid looks over sees an old man with s*it eating grin wave bye and he be gone..chevelles,vettes you name it..Harrah beat it..quite an amazing character.....

So far, we've finished the run twice. The last time we clocked at 162 MPH. Next time out we're going for more.

While on this topic I thought I'd pass this one on. It's real, and the names have been changed... This is a 620 HP LS1 F-body with 2.73 gears and a 6 speed.
BTW; In Tampa we have a 4.2 mile long flat bridge that most "Play" on...

------------------------------------------

This was a very entertaining Saturday night for me, some good, some bad. I told a buddy earilier it may be a very good night, or may be really bad, but was looking forward to it none the less.

I allready had a date to run **** in his Unholy ZR1, and I met a Supra guy while purchasing the high octane stuff, and he told me that quite a few supra's would be out tonight. That made me happy, because I respect the hell out of those cars and had never ran one.

**** and I agreed to go on a 40 ish roll and tho we werent planning on doing it when we did, the perfect opportunity presented itself while we were driving to another spot. I looked over and he asked if I just wanted to do it now? And I said sure...bad, bad mistake. I had not let my bottle pressure come up to where I like it at, 1150 psi, as it was only at 1000psi, and I royally screwed up the launch. I went in second gear at apx 3500 rpm -as opposed to being in 1st at about 4400 rpm--and he a** raped me like I have never been violated before. I swear to God, it looked like that vette pulled the front wheels off the ground at 45 mph...He put 4-5 cars on me instantly. When the rpms came up to 4600 and the second stage kicked in I got my moral victory, and stopped him pulling me. Shifted to 3rd and maybe made up a little ground and then reached for 4th to only jam it in and not get it. But it was over any way's.

I don't think that even if I had launched in 1st I could have beat him, as that car flat out put it all on the ground and moved the heck out. I most likely would have just spun and watched him pull away. Unfortunately the ZR1 developed a problem during the run and will hopefully not be down for too long. I'm just dumb enough to try again.

Now for the good part for me.

I met up with the aforementioned Supra folks and one very fast one (who I will not name in here out of respect) asked if i was ready to go. Having just been pummeled, I figured it couldnt hurt any worse, so why not. We left and went to another location that afforded plenty of room to run at high speeds , and made a total of 3 runs.
Run #1 - 50 ish roll and unbelievably I pulled him instantly and put several cars on him from 2nd to 3rd and I got out of it before 4th. I was amazed and figured something wasnt right...phone rings...whoops, he left his boost controller off -DOH!! No problem, we take a break and let my bottle pressure build back up and go out again.
Run #2 - 50 ish roll again, and this time he puts 2 cars on me from the start, I hold it at that distance as I shift into 3rd...and we come upon traffic and have to shut down--but he had me on that one. Traffic clears and we now have a very long open road and decide to go one more time...
Run #3 -60 ish roll this time, and that is my perfect launch as both stages come on allmost at the same time--we both launch like astronauts and are at least dead even--as I could not see him in front of me, and am VERY focused on road/shift light. Bang third and we must still be even-but 3rd is a long gear for me, and holy ****--I see him in my rear view mirror now!! (He told me he had difficulty shifting into 4th and thats when I pulled him) I stay in it and shift to 4th...holy **** things are flying by and at ungodly speeds, and I still see him in just about the same place in my rearview mirror. I keep in it for what seemed like forever as light polls are now blurring by and the roar resenating off the wall to my left is deafening --BUT HE IS STILL IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR!! Now the track is closing up at an alarming rate-I put it in neutral and start decellerating as best I could without engaging abs....whew.
We pull off and go to a spot to get out and talk, and go over what just happened. When we get out of our cars--both grinning like school kids and do the shake hug, like we just experienced something awsome. It was. I have never driven that fast in my life. The estimate was somewhere around 170+. Top of 5th for him is 190, and he was just about there when we shut it down.
He told me that when he missed the 4th gear shift, and then got it in, that he figured he would just stay in it and ultimately run me down...but could not. I don't know who would have won if he had not goofed up the shift, but we are gonna need to be on a salt flat most likely to determine that!

About Us

The PY Online Forums is the largest online gathering of Pontiac enthusiasts anywhere in the world. Founded in 1991, it was also the first online forum for people to gather and talk about their Pontiacs. Since then, it has become the mecca of Pontiac technical data and knowledge that no other place can surpass.
