Cool!

I've spoken to the original owner & he had ordered the 400/4spd combo but being such a late car in the year, by the time production rolled around they were out of the Pontiac 400's. He got a call one day from the salesman who asked him if he wanted the 400/auto or the 301/4spd combo & he stuck with the 4spd.

He was nice enough to mail me copies of the work up form he had with the salesperson when they renegotiated the price.

In 79 they called both engines a 400, what they didn't tell you was if you ordered a 400 with an auto you got the olds 403 , but if you ordered the 400 with the 4 spd you got a real engine (pontiac) I ordered mine very early in 78 before it was let out that you olny got a Pontiac engine with a 4spd. I know this by fact because when mine was delivered to me at my gas station I told the salesman that it didn't sound right, Then when I opened the hood to find out why it sounded wrong , there it was a big old olds engine. I told him to take it back & get me the car I ordered. He came back about 2 hours later to tell me the only way I could get a Pontiac 400 was with the 4 spd. I told him to get me one then. 2 months later I still didn't have one becaus eno one would let the 400 Pontiac car go. So I never got mine in 79.

Must have been some uniformed salesman. In the summer of '78, my Dad special ordered a solar gold '79 T/A for my mom. We knew from the gitt-go, it was going to have a 403 in it. Mom's old '77 GP SJ with 400 & 3.23's was quicker out of the hole. I tried to order a 79 400 4spd T/A for myself in the late winter of '79. Like you mention, wasn't possible as the allocation of 400 4spds had already been allotted to orders. The only 400 4spd cars I could find in N Texas & OK dealer stocks were TATA's & I didn't want one...still don't

Very nice car, & yes the salesman I delt with was a dumb ass he thought he knew everything & when he came back practily begging me to keep the car , he let me drive it for 2 days so I would get lost in the new car feeling, I knew when I took it I wasnt gong to keep it, but is ok while I had it. I still told him no , & they found someone else to buy that reskined cutlass.

The wife isn't interested in anything to do with this hobby. If I had a place to keep it and had the money I sure would buy it. I really do miss my 79 Formula. I still pull out the window sticker from time to time to remember......

Not sure - I only passed your contact information onto them, as they were looking for a Firebird of those years.
