Standard wheel with 4 piston disc brakes
What would have been the standard wheel and hubcap for a 68 gto that came with 4 piston disc brakes? I have my Phs documentation and none of the wheel or hub cap options were highlighted. It had g77-14 redlines on it.

Not an expert and surprised w/# of views no one chimed in, but they will now if I'm wrong. First off if you have nothing in box 45 or 46 your car most likely was built w/poverty/dog dish caps. The fact that it is a 4 piston disk brake car is what will make it difficult to find 14 x 6 steel wheels that won't hit , unless you have the originals ??? If not easier to go with a 15" steely until you can find correct wheel. The drum brake wheel will hit. Is that what your looking to do , back as original ?

Should have also mentioned that if date code isn't important 69 and later 14 x 6 should fit over the calipers.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t sure if it would have came with poverty caps or some kind of wheel cover hub cap. My car’s billing history is very hard to read but I think block 45 and 46 are blank. I would like to restore the car as original as I can. Unfortunately the car’s original wheels are long gone. I will have to source some 14x6’s or maybe run some 15’s.

Nicely optioned car. Surprising to see manual disc with all the options, but w/the 4 spd not needed in my mind. My 68 is manual disc as well. Believe gold car is one that would have had body color wheel.

Thanks for your help. That clears a lot up. Sounds like I needs some 14x6 steel wheels for disc brakes and paint them body color. I thought it was optioned strangely too. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen manual discs before. Sounds like there is at least one more optioned that way, though.

There was a user here, user name 'TOYSWEDO', that had a lot of original steel wheels for sale at one time. You might try him.

'67 and 68 Pontiac A-bodys with factory 4 piston disc brakes used the same caliper brackets & 4 piston calipers. A good friend, who rarely posts on this board, has a '67 GTO with factory 4 piston discs. on the '67's, DB was the disc brake 14x6 steel wheel. Drum wheels for '67 still had a big 6 up by the valve stem. '68 Pontiac A-bodys, the codes for the std 14x6 steel wheels are different. HF's & HG's come to mind. on '68 Chevelle SS's, they received 4 piston disc calipers, though I believe those calipers are a slight different casting. XE's were '68 usage on Chevelles with 4 piston disc. XE's continued to be used up through '70 model. With the numerous different factory 4 piston calipers produced, have to double ck them all. John, once it cools down a little, will be moving more factory steel & rally wheels over, have a huge stock to put in pallet racks, i will keep my eyes peeled. If I had an original pair of '67-68 caliper brackets handy id be in the position to jig up a stock 4 piston disc spindle with a 2 piece rotor & test fit a wide variety of 14 & 15" wheels.

OPH,
When you sort those wheels, put a April-July HG 14x6 steelie on the list, MI factory code if possible. I got the four corners covered now .... but could use a spare. |

I have a full set of JC's that came from an April 68 Pontiac MI car. I think they are large font? I'll have to look into weather they are large or small stampings. I know they will fit over 69 style single calipers, but I am guessing that's a smaller setup. About 2 weeks ago & was measuring the space difference between those wheels & the 7" KS wheels I have on my car now. Seemed minimal, but maybe the 4 piston calipers are very tight fitting?

I have front discs on my '68 GTO. It has 14" factory Rally II Wheels Stamped JA.
The Wheels fit over the factory calipers just fine. |
