Feel free post a pic of the date. I stand by earlier posts, have pulled too many "138"s over the years.

isn't that the casting number used from 1971 through to the end of Pontiac V8 production?

Quite likely one of few '70 Muncie three speed Formula 400's left.

the first "296" casting pumps did not show up till mid winter 1972. The first couple years of "296" casting pumps had a small 72 cast into them. Common to see that style of casting with the small 72 on original '73 & '74 dated "296" pumps.

More from the above link:
"488296 continued on throughout the '70's... basically it is the most common "tall" w/p casting. The font & style of casting numbers got much bigger as the '70's rolled along. Even original Pontiac 301 & 265 waterpumps were built from this casting, be it with a different design low drag cast impeller. Often the impellers have been changed at rebuilders, so don't count today, on a very late dated one to have it's original low drag cast impeller."

Should have also noted earlier that sometime in '79, Pontiac Central Foundary went away from using Alpha Numeric date coding on the "296" water pumps & went to a Julian date code, this was for '80 & 81 model 301's & 265's as well as over the counter Service Parts water pumps.

Tall 488296 casting numbers and the small 72 cast on a K191 pump (November 19, 1971). That's from an original 72 cars with a November 26 production date.

I need to look at my 72 GTO (Oct 26th) and see what pump I have on that car

I always thought the 488296 pump with the 72 casting are the correct one for 72 cars.
