Is this a Sprint ?
I have an eye on this but can't get any help from the seller who doesn't know much and I'm only gonna go see the car in a few days, so can anyone help me with this picture as if this is a regular cammer or a Sprint ?

Is it a 4bbl carb? If seller doesn't know have him remove air cleaner and take another picture. Or get closer and take picture of exhaust manifold. Air cleaner doesn't always help because there are a lot of interchangeable ones out there.

From that picture it is impossible to tell, it looks to have a 69 Sprint Aircleaner base, but it would have a Chrome lid from the factory, but a 1bbl lid will bolt on, the only difference is paint or Chrome.
Even if has a 4bbl intake on it, it may have been swapped onto it in the 50 years after it was built. If you can post some more pictures it would help a lot.

We need a picture of the harmonic balancer. The one on a Sprint is larger than a regular one. Just because it has a 4 Bbl does NOT make it a Sprint. People swap a 4 Bbl intake onto the engine & think they have a sprint. There is a lot more involved than that. There appears to be a mis-match in the engine to belt cover to cam housing paint. If the owner has receipts for a head repair/ replacement it may indicate what head is on the car, by the number of springs required on the valves. ( just a thought )

PHS is the best way to confirm.

Agreed, I did see it has the correct 1969 only upper timing belt cover, you can just make out the little bumps on the side of the cover to bolt the stamped steel rear upper cover.

I agree with Sprintbird. The only problem is a time factor. It seems most sellers ( in my experience ) do not want the car checked, ( we know why ) or do not want to wait for them to be checked. A seller who truly believes his car is "the real deal" has paperwork, or lacking that, the confidence to accept a deposit with the contingent that the car checks out by PHS. here on the east coast I have seen too many "Sprints" ( over the years ) that are " Seller Made" I sometimes wonder where all these 4 Bbl intakes came from ? Did previous owners pull them off to sell ? Or did GM decide to bang out an extra 1000 or so 4 Bbl intakes as spares ?
On a second note "Good eyes " Jeff, I missed that in the photo. Wayne |
