FYI: 77 shakers are different than 78-79, they have a much lower profile height.

that looks to be a 78-79.

78W72 - You are correct. In 1977 when the Shaker style changed from the 70-76 style, it had a much lower profile and had a ridge going up the center line o f the shaker.
However, over the past 25 years I have talked to several owners of low mile original 77 TA's with late build dates (May - June) that had the Higher profile shaker and they told me the shaker was original. In my search for a S/E I went to look at 2 unrestored 77's that also had the taller shaker. Could they have been changed? Sure. And if it were one case, I would have just thought that it was replaced.
Seeing 7-8 77's with the taller shaker makes me think that it is possible there was a changeover prior to 78, but I have found no documentation for it and only the word of the owners. If anyone has more information about the use of the shakers and the changeover point I would really like to know. But the low profile shaker with the ridge was definitely only used in 77.
As far as fitment goes, this shaker will fit 77-79 W72's, though not correct for most 77's as you point out.

Hey Shift - pretty sure you are right about the taller shaker being used on late build 77 TAs. I always thought all 77 TAs had the low profile shaker. But, I think pontiac switched to the taller shaker starting late in 77 model year (possibly around May 1 1977?). I cant recall where I read it - dont think it was Rockys TA book - but did read somewhere.

Thanks for confirming that the change was late 77. If you ever find where you read it, I would like to document it for my notes.

Thanks!

I had a '77 (that I bought in '78 from original owner) with the low profile scoop. It's serial was 197624....so a switch to taller had to be after that.

FWIW,
Eric

I think there’s a 77 bulletin on up this, look in a 77 binder.
