Late '73 Headliner, Shoulder Belt Arrangement
Trying to determine my options for seat belts and headliners.
Late 73 introduced the cardboard one piece headliner, and in general is a no-shoulder belt option from my understanding. 74- up does have the shoulder belt option and the cutout on the headliner board. Does the 70-73 firebird roof substructure have the proper mounting for the 74-up shoulder retractors? Can the non-retracting shoulder belts be used with the one piece late-73 headliner board that does not have the retractor cutouts? For 70-73 cars, what are the lap belt retractor options? Do any 2nd gen actually bolt up? Obviously, I'm not trying to go factory-correct. .

ALL '73 Firebirds have shoulder straps.
Shoulder harness was mandated by the DOT in 1968 ( by Calendar year, so '68's built in '67 do NOT have these added cost items) The shoulder harness stayed the same throughout '73 model year with a plastic "gutter" above the door to fold the shoulder portion into and the lap belt part was retractable and mounted to the inside of the rocker near the front seats. The shoulder harness has a "Button" on it that clips into a hole in the lap belt at the clasp. This system ( with the "exploding belt" female connectors) was used from around Dec '71 through all of '73 model year. This system did NOT change with the Hardboard headliner. While repair parts are now available for the "exploding" type of seat belts, I wouldn't use this type unless originality is more paramount than safety. I prefer Morris concept 3 point belts that bolt into the factory holes and retract. They work just as easily as a brand new car. Grab the male end and latch it to the female by the center console. These are in colors now too. I have used them for 9 years and love them. My "gutters" on the 73 are just empty. Morris concept is where I would highly recommend heading I believe our host AMES PERFORMANCE sells these part # FA222D , you'll have to call for color and latch symbol options. |

Thank you gentlemen, very helpful!
I was confused over the listings, and couldn't find pics, so knew this would be the place to come for the correct info! I think that's what I will do, get the Morris ones, I refuse to install one of those plastic gutters. I was considering using an A body arrangement, and the wire retainers along the trim line, but think the 3-point is a better approach. Only thing that I see on the aftermarket 3-point setups is there's a metal strap to attach the shoulder belt to the roof substructure? Or is that not the Morris setup? .
