Default 1960 Manual Steering to Power Steering Process

Hey Guys,

So I just picked up a 1960 Catalina 2 door that I am planning on using as a daily driver, and will also be the backup vehicle anytime my wife's car is down. That said, the car is manual steering and brakes, which I'll need to remedy if she is going to occasionally drive it.

I know a lot about the later cars, but not too much about this era, so I'm hoping that I can get help in figuring out what I need to get as far as parts.

I don't actually have the car here yet - and haven't gotten manuals, so I'm flying a bit blind.

Here is basically what I am trying to figure out:

1) What year power steering boxes work (and what other makes use the same one)?

2) Is the steering column different?

3) What years are the pumps and engine brackets the same?

4) What pulleys do I need, and again - what years work?

I'm hoping to start to source this stuff now so that I have it when I finally get the car here.

Thanks in advance!

-Shaggy

After studying the Pontiac Master parts catalog , I have come to the following conclusions .
1. The steering column is different, and 1960 is all by itself.
2. Steering gears and pumps from 1959 might fit 1960, but no guarentees.
3. Other steering parts, such as pitman arms and steering linkage are also different between power and non power steering .

Probably the easiest way to do this is to obtain another 1960 Pontiac parts car, with power steering , and change everything from the steering wheel to the spindles.
Here's a link to the 1960 Master parts catalog;

Wow, thanks for that link!!!

So I think I'm actually set on everything except the crank and water pump pulleys. I am buying a steering column, box, and linkage from a fellow member, and I bought a pump with brackets off of ebay.

I'll dig on the online parts manual and figure out what the part numbers are for the pulleys, and what years they fit.

Thanks again!

Shaggy
