Default Carpenters- how would you do this?

Putting in 1/2” thick oak baseboard trim. How do I make this look good? There’s a small “step” in the wall, but too thin to do anything with.
Ps. I’m no carpenter!

Thanks for the reply. I don’t understand though. The vent is on the floor, first pic might be confusing.
The step in the wall is about the thickness of the trim itself. Just wanted it to look clean without the end of one showing, figured the pros must have a trick

I'd miter the end of the board that is further out, then cut a small return piece to go to the other board.

I agree with this answer, which is what I would have said, but I saw the first pic differently.

Your last pic looks really good though, I think you solved your puzzle.

That’s what I figured, but it would go from about 1/2” to nothing with the taper of the ranch trim.
Thanks for the help though. You don’t even notice it unless you’re sitting on the throne in there.

Rental, but you did not say if you are the tenant or landlord. A landlord would not be concerned as he/she does not live there. A tenant is minimally concerned as he/she does not own the property (unless the tenant is very long term or permanent). I have been both. A somewhat extreme fix would be to install another piece of drywall over the inset piece. Then finishing is involved. then the complete wall would look much better.
Also, you could just get a 1/2" thick piece of solid lumber the same width as the base board to bump out the baseboard from the inset drywall.
