I'd like to connect a battery powered, 4000 watt, 48vdc (input) 240vac (output) inverter to my home electrical system.

I'm somewhat confused by one aspect. Like most US homes mine uses the typical 240vac split phase wiring ... meaning 120v is supplied by one hot leg of the 240vac buss, and the neutral.

I thought I could just wire in the 240vac output of an inverter to the 240vac buss in the panel (via a transfer switch) and I would have both 240vac power and 120vac to the outlets ... but now I seem to be seeing that many inverters are not suitable for attachment to split phase house wiring without autotransformers, stacked inverters etc? Is this true?

I have also heard there are inverters that are suitable for use in a split phase system, but I am not familiar enough with terminology to know what to look for etc. I would assume a split phase capable inverter would have three output connections ... two hot legs and a neutral. I've also heard of inverters with "floating neutrals" that can be used in split phase systems.

Any clarification would be nice.

Well I did find a solution, it's been working in the house for a few years now. Giant a** inverter plugged into the welding outlet in my shop backfeeding the main panel through an interlock.
